The Seven Deadly Sins

The Seven Deadly Sins is a fantasy action anime based on the manga by Nakaba Suzuki. The manga ran in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine from 2012 to 2020 and filled 41 books. This first season was made by the studio A-1 Pictures and directed by Tensai Okamura. It has 24 episodes and aired in Japan from October 2014 to March 2015. The music is by Hiroyuki Sawano, a composer famous for big, loud, exciting battle music.

The story takes place in Britannia, a land of castles, magic, giants, and fairies that feels like an old European legend. Long ago, the Seven Deadly Sins were the strongest group of knights in the Kingdom of Liones. Each member carries the name of one of the seven sins, such as Wrath or Greed. Ten years before the story starts, people said the group had planned a coup, which means a secret plan to take power from the king by force. After that, the Sins split up and disappeared. Everyone now thinks of them as dangerous criminals.

In the years since then, the Holy Knights have grown very powerful. They are supposed to protect the kingdom, but now they rule it with fear and take what they want from ordinary towns. One young princess, Elizabeth Liones, gets away from them. She is brave, kind, and a little clumsy. She believes the old stories are wrong, and she sets out alone to find the missing Sins and ask them for help.

Her search leads her to a tiny traveling bar that sits on the back of a giant green pig. The owner is Meliodas, a short, cheerful young man who acts silly and likes to tease people. His talking pig, Hawk, eats the leftover food and complains a lot. Meliodas does not look like a legend at all. Yet he is the captain of the Sins. Together, he and Elizabeth start to travel across Britannia to find the other members, while the Holy Knights chase them.

One by one, the group grows. Diane is a giant girl with a big heart. Ban is a rough, joking man and Meliodas's best friend. King is a fairy with a quiet, serious side. Each member brings their own power, their own secrets, and their own reasons for staying away for ten years. Much of the fun comes from watching this odd team of old friends meet again, argue, and slowly learn to trust each other.

The show mixes many moods. There are huge battles with flying weapons and broken ground, but there is also a lot of light comedy at the bar. The anime also has some adult humor, and Meliodas often acts rudely toward Elizabeth for laughs, which some viewers dislike. An Anime News Network reviewer said the show was not just for little kids, because the fights can be very violent. The manga won the boys' category at the Kodansha Manga Awards in 2015, and the series has sold more than 55 million copies. For new fans, this first season is the place to start a long adventure about friendship, loyalty, and fighting back when the people in power are wrong.
