Kuromi will headline her first theatrical anime film, opening in Japan in 2027 with Gaga distributing
Sanrio used Kuromi's October 31 birthday to announce a theatrical anime film starring the character, due in Japanese cinemas in 2027. Staff, cast, story and an exact date are still to come, and overseas plans will be announced later.
More than two decades after she first showed up as My Melody's troublemaking rival, Kuromi is getting a movie of her own.
Sanrio chose October 31, the character's birthday, to confirm that she will lead a theatrical anime feature playing nationwide in Japan in 2027. Gaga is planning and releasing it, and a dedicated website went live with the news.
Beyond that, little is settled. Nobody has been named to direct or voice the film, no studio has been attached, the plot is unknown and there is no exact date. According to the movie's site, any plans outside Japan will be shared when they are decided.
The reveal came with a celebratory image carrying the line 主役はクロミ ("Kuromi is the star") and a short clip in which Kuromi reacts to the news, joined by her sidekick Baku.
A long road to top billing
Kuromi first appeared in the 2005 anime Onegai My Melody, recognizable by her black jester hood marked with a pink skull, and written as a hard case with a secretly girlish side. Her screen time has grown lately. She fronted the 2023 web shorts KUROMI'S PRETTY JOURNEY, and two years later she was co-lead alongside My Melody in My Melody & Kuromi, a stop-motion show of 12 episodes that Netflix released worldwide in July 2025, tied to My Melody's 50th anniversary and Kuromi's 20th.
Her reach now goes well past animation. TOY'S FACTORY launched her as a major-label recording act in October 2025, and in Sanrio's 2026 Character Ranking, where voting hit a record 70.6 million, she came fourth. Sanrio also runs a campaign around her, the "World Kuromification Project," which promotes being true to yourself.
