About
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is a romantic comedy made by the studio A-1 Pictures. It is based on a manga by Aka Akasaka, which ran from 2015 to 2022 and won the Shogakukan Manga Award. The anime was directed by Shinichi Omata, and most episodes were written by Yasuhiro Nakanishi. This first season has 12 episodes and aired in Japan from January to March 2019. It was such a hit that it led to two more seasons, a film, and specials.
The story is set at Shuchiin Academy, a very rich and famous private school in Tokyo. Many children from powerful families study there. At the top of the school is the student council, a small group of students who help run school events. Two of them are the stars of the show.
Miyuki Shirogane is the council president. He is the best student in the whole school and always gets the top score on exams. But he is not rich at all. He works hard, studies late into the night, and is often very tired. Kaguya Shinomiya is the vice president. She comes from one of the richest and most important families in Japan. She is smart, elegant, and good at almost everything, but she grew up in a strict and lonely home and does not know much about normal life.
The two secretly like each other. The problem is that both of them are very proud. In their minds, the person who says "I love you" first loses, because they would have to admit they are weaker. So instead of confessing, each one makes clever and silly plans to make the other one confess first. Who will offer to share an umbrella? Who will ask the other to see a movie? Should you accept a lunch someone made? Small, normal things turn into huge battles of the mind. A serious narrator explains each plan like a war report, and at the end of many short stories he announces who "won" that day. Often, nobody wins at all.
Around them are other fun characters. Chika Fujiwara, the council secretary, is cheerful, random, and full of energy. She does not know about the secret war, so she often ruins both of their plans by accident. Her song-and-dance ending in one episode became famous online. Yu Ishigami, the treasurer, is a gloomy boy who loves video games and often says the wrong thing at the wrong time. Kaguya's maid and helper, Ai Hayasaka, also appears and helps with some of her schemes.
Each episode is split into small stories, so the show is easy to watch in short pieces. The jokes come from quick talking, big reactions, and strange camera moves that make everyday school moments look like high-stakes thrillers. But under the comedy there is also real warmth. Slowly we learn why Kaguya is so cold to others, and why Shirogane works so hard, and the show lets these quiet, honest moments shine. The Japanese voice cast includes Aoi Koga as Kaguya, Makoto Furukawa as Shirogane, and Konomi Kohara as Chika. The opening song, "Love Dramatic," is by Masayuki Suzuki featuring Rikka Ihara.
