About
My Hero Academia Season 2 is where the superhero school story really grows. Bones made it again, with Kenji Nagasaki directing and Yuki Hayashi writing the music. It aired in Japan on ytv and NTV from April 1 to September 30, 2017. At 25 episodes, it is almost twice as long as the first season. It adapts the rest of the third volume of Kohei Horikoshi's manga up to the eighth volume, and it has a recap episode called Hero Notebook in the middle.
The season is built around three big story parts. The first is the U.A. Sports Festival. This is a huge yearly contest at U.A. High School, and it is shown on national TV, a bit like a sports event in the real world. Students from every course take part, not just future heroes, but also students who build gear and students in the general course. For young heroes, the festival is a chance to be noticed by professional heroes who might hire them later. The contest moves through races, team battles, and finally one-on-one fights.
This arc gives many classmates their spotlight. Shoto Todoroki is a quiet, cool student who can make both ice and fire, but he refuses to use his fire side because of a painful family history. His fight with Izuku Midoriya is one of the most loved episodes of the series. Ochaco Uraraka, Tenya Iida, and Katsuki Bakugo also get strong moments. Izuku is still learning to use the power that All Might gave him, and each fight pushes him and his body to the limit.
The second part follows the students as they work short internships with professional heroes. Here the season turns darker. A killer named Stain, known as the Hero Killer, has been attacking heroes he thinks are fake or only in it for money. Tenya Iida has a very personal reason to chase him, and his anger puts him and his friends in real danger. This arc asks a hard question that the series returns to again and again: what makes someone a true hero?
The third part is the end-of-term final exams. Instead of normal tests, the students must team up and face their own teachers in practice battles. This forces old rivals to work together, including Izuku and Bakugo, whose tense friendship is a key part of the show.
The tone mixes the fun of a school sports story with growing danger in the wider world. The music is a big part of the mood. The first opening, Peace Sign, is by Kenshi Yonezu, and the second, Sora ni Utaeba, is by amazarashi. LiSA and Little Glee Monster sang the ending songs. Many fans see this season as the moment the series became a true hit.
