About
My Hero Academia is the first season of the long-running superhero anime from the studio Bones. It is based on the manga by Kohei Horikoshi. Kenji Nagasaki directed it, Yosuke Kuroda wrote the series plan, and Yuki Hayashi wrote the music. The 13 episodes aired in Japan on MBS from April 3 to June 26, 2016. The season adapts the first 21 chapters of the manga. In the United States, the English dub later aired on the Toonami block of Adult Swim in 2018.
The show is set in a modern world where most people are born with a special power. These powers are called Quirks. A Quirk can be anything, from breathing fire to floating objects to having the head of a frog. Because so many people have powers, crime has changed too, and being a professional hero is now a real job. Heroes are ranked, have fans, and work almost like celebrities or police officers. The most loved hero of all is All Might, a huge, smiling man who has become a symbol of peace.
Izuku Midoriya, a shy boy who is often called Deku, has dreamed of being a hero his whole life. He fills notebooks with notes about every hero he sees. But Izuku is one of the few people who has no Quirk at all. Other kids, especially his loud and talented childhood friend Katsuki Bakugo, make fun of him for it. Everything changes when Izuku meets All Might in person. All Might sees something special in the boy's courage and decides to pass his own power, called One For All, on to him.
With that gift, Izuku has a chance to enter U.A. High School, the top school in Japan for young heroes. The season follows his hard training, the tough entrance exam, and his first days in Class 1-A. There he meets classmates like the cheerful Ochaco Uraraka, who can make things weightless, and many others with odd and fun powers. The trouble is that Izuku's new power is far too strong for his body, and using it can badly hurt him. Learning to control it becomes one of his biggest challenges. Near the end of the season, a group called the League of Villains attacks a training site, and the students face real danger for the first time.
The tone is bright and full of energy, but it also has real emotion. It is a story about effort, dreams, and what it truly means to save people. Izuku is not the strongest or the coolest student. He wins hearts because he never stops trying, and because he runs toward people in trouble without thinking about himself. The fights are big and colorful, and the large class of students gives the show a warm school feeling.
The opening song, The Day, is by Porno Graffitti, and the ending song is by Brian the Sun. This first season is short, but it laid the ground for a series that ran for many seasons and several movies, ending with the final season in 2025.
