SPY x FAMILY

SPY x FAMILY began as a manga by Tatsuya Endo. It has run on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ app and website since March 2019. The anime was made by two studios working together, Wit Studio and CloverWorks, and the first season was directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi. This entry covers the first half of that season, twelve episodes that aired in Japan from April 9 to June 25, 2022. The second half came in the fall of the same year.

The story takes place in a world that looks a lot like Europe in the middle of the last century. Two countries, Westalis and Ostania, are not fighting with guns, but they do not trust each other at all. This kind of tense, quiet standoff is often called a "cold war." Instead of soldiers, both sides use spies. Some fans think the two countries are based on West and East Germany, but the author has never said so.

The hero is the best spy Westalis has. People know him only by his code name, Twilight. His new job is to get close to Donovan Desmond, an important Ostanian politician who could ruin the fragile peace. Desmond almost never appears in public. The only real way to reach him is through the expensive private school his son goes to, Eden Academy. To get in, Twilight needs a child, and the school also expects a proper family. So he takes a new name, Loid Forger, and pretends to be a doctor who helps people with their minds. Then he quickly builds a fake family.

He adopts a small girl named Anya from an orphanage. He also marries Yor, a quiet woman who works at City Hall. What Loid does not know is that both of them have secrets, too. Anya can read minds. Yor is a hired killer who works at night. Neither adult knows the truth about the other. Only Anya knows everything, because she can hear what they think. She is excited to live with a real spy and a real assassin, and she works very hard to keep the family together.

This mix is the heart of the show. Each person joined the family for their own reason, and each one is afraid of being found out. But over time, the fake home starts to feel real. The show moves easily between fast action scenes, spy missions, and funny everyday moments, like school tests, shopping trips, and family dinners. Anya's huge facial expressions and her funny thoughts are a big part of why people love it. Later in the story, a large white dog named Bond joins the family. He can see bits of the future, and only Anya knows this.

The tone is warm and light, even with all the guns and danger. Endo's editor asked him to make this series more cheerful than his earlier, darker work, and it shows. The manga has won many awards, including the Japan Cartoonists Association Award Grand Prize in 2023, and more than 42 million copies are in print. The anime became one of the most talked-about shows of 2022. It is a good pick for viewers who want action and comedy together, and for anyone who likes stories about people slowly becoming a family by choice.
