Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles

Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles is a fantasy anime based on a light novel series by Yuri Kitayama, with art by Riv. (A light novel is a short Japanese novel with some pictures.) Hobby Japan began printing the books in 2015. The anime was made by TMS Entertainment and directed by Osamu Yamasaki. It aired from July to September 2021 on TV Tokyo and other channels. It belongs to the isekai genre, which means stories where a person from our world ends up living in a different, magical world.

This show adds its own twist to that idea. The hero is not a grown-up who wakes up in a new body. Instead, he is a poor child named Rio who already lives in the fantasy land of the Beltrum Kingdom. Rio is an orphan. His mother was murdered when he was very small, and he has had to scrape by on his own in the city's poorest streets. One day, memories from another life suddenly flood into his mind. They belong to Haruto Amakawa, a Japanese college student who died in an accident. Haruto had one big wish: to meet again the girl he grew up with and cared about. Now the two lives mix inside one boy, and Rio must figure out who he really is.

Rio's luck changes when he happens to stop some men who are trying to kidnap a young princess named Flora. As a reward, he is allowed to study at the Royal Academy, a school mostly for the sons and daughters of nobles. The other students look down on him because he was born poor, and some treat him very badly. One of the few people who is kind to him is Celia Claire, a young teacher and gifted magic user. Their friendship becomes one of the warmest parts of the story.

Later, Rio is blamed for something he did not do during a school training trip, and he has to run away from the kingdom. On his journey he helps free Latifa, a young girl from the beastkin people (people with animal ears and tails) who was forced to work as an assassin. He also learns about spirit arts, a special kind of magic that uses the power of spirits, and he grows much stronger. Rio carries a deep goal in his heart, too. He wants to find the person who killed his mother and make them pay.

The series mixes school drama, sword fights, magic battles, and slow-growing romance. There are several girls around Rio, so the show has some harem elements, which means many female characters who care for the main character. It also looks at unfair class systems, where birth decides how people are treated, and at the pain of losing family. For viewers who like calm, kind heroes who are also very skilled fighters, Seirei Gensouki offers a steady adventure. The story continued in a second season in 2024, and a third season has since been announced.
