About
Fruits Basket: The Final is the third and last season of the 2019 Fruits Basket anime. It has 13 episodes. Western fans could stream it first, starting March 20, 2021. Japanese TV then showed it from April 6 to June 29, 2021. TMS Entertainment made the series, with Yoshihide Ibata as director and Taku Kishimoto writing the scripts. This new anime is special because it tells the whole story of Natsuki Takaya's manga, all 23 volumes. An older anime from 2001 only covered the beginning. This final season adapts the end of the story, from volume 17 to the last chapter.
The manga ran in the girls' magazine Hana to Yume from 1998 to 2006. It became one of the best-selling shojo manga of all time, with around 30 million copies around the world. Shojo means stories made mainly for young girls, often about feelings and relationships. Many people say Fruits Basket helped make shojo popular in the United States.
The story centers on Tohru Honda, a kind and hard-working high school girl. After her mother died, Tohru ended up living with members of the wealthy Sohma family. She soon learned their big secret. Thirteen members of the family are cursed. When they are hugged by someone of the opposite sex, or when their bodies are weak, they turn into animals from the Chinese zodiac, plus the cat. Among them are Yuki, a quiet and admired classmate, and Kyo, a hot-tempered boy who carries the curse of the cat. The family is ruled by Akito, the head of the Sohma clan, who holds a frightening and almost god-like power over the cursed members.
By this final season, Tohru has decided she wants to break the curse. She cares deeply about the Sohmas and wants them to be free. But she has her own reasons that she cannot easily say out loud, and she feels that time is short. Old wounds and family secrets come to the surface. Each character must face their past and decide whether they can move forward. A real hint about how the curse works finally appears, giving everyone a reason to hope.
At its heart, Fruits Basket is about healing. Many characters were hurt by their parents or by the family's harsh rules. The show looks honestly at trauma, loneliness, and cruel adults, but it never loses its warmth. It shows how kindness, friendship, and love can help people slowly mend. There is also romance and plenty of gentle comedy to balance the heavy moments.
The 2019 series was praised for its emotional feeling, animation, music, and voice acting. Anime News Network named it the best show of Spring 2019. The second season won Best Drama at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, and The Final was nominated for Best Drama and Best Romance. In 2022, The Final also won Anime of the Year at the 8th Anime Trending Awards. For many fans, this season is a tearful and satisfying ending to a beloved story.
