About
Battle in Egypt is the second half of the Stardust Crusaders story in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. The studio David Production made it, and it ran for 24 episodes on Japanese TV from January to June 2015. In the United States, it later aired in English on Adult Swim's Toonami block in 2018. It picks up right where the first half stopped, so it is best to watch that half first.
After a long trip across Asia, the group finally crosses the Red Sea by submarine and steps onto Egyptian land. The team is the same as before: Jotaro Kujo, a quiet and tough high school student; his clever grandfather Joseph Joestar; Mohammed Avdol, a fortune teller from Cairo; Noriaki Kakyoin, a calm young man who once worked for the enemy; and Jean Pierre Polnareff, a proud and hot-headed fighter from France. Their goal has not changed. They must reach the vampire Dio, who is hiding somewhere in Cairo. Only by beating him can they save Holly, Jotaro's mother, who is very sick because of his return.
Egypt brings a new kind of danger. Right away, the group is attacked in the Sahara desert by a blind fighter with a Stand that moves through water. A Stand is a special power that takes shape like a ghostly helper standing beside its owner. In the first half of the trip, most enemy Stands were named after tarot cards, the picture cards some people use to tell fortunes. Now the names change. A new set of nine enemies has Stands named after the gods of ancient Egypt. They are some of Dio's most loyal followers, and they are stronger and stranger than the ones before.
The heroes also gain a new and very unusual partner. At the old temples of Abu Simbel, they meet Iggy, a small Boston Terrier dog. Iggy has his own Stand, called The Fool, which can shape sand and dust. He is lazy and grumpy, he does not like people much, and he loves chewing gum. Watching this stubborn little dog slowly become part of the team is one of the funny and warm parts of the season. Iggy's sharp nose also helps the group as they move closer to Dio's home.
Like the first half, the show is made of many short adventures. Each new enemy has a strange power that works like a riddle. One power might work only under special rules, and the heroes must find the rule to win. This makes the fights feel smart, not just loud. Between battles, there are still jokes, silly arguments, and moments of real friendship.
As the group gets closer to Cairo, the story becomes more serious. The fights get harder, and the team is pushed to its limits. The mood moves from a fun road trip toward a dark and tense final stretch. There is some blood and violence, so it fits older kids and adults best. For many fans, this part of the journey is one of the most exciting chapters in the whole JoJo series.
