About
Stardust Crusaders is the part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure that many fans remember best. In the manga, this third part ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1989 to 1992. It is the part that first brought in "Stands," the special powers that later became the most famous idea in the whole series. The studio David Production adapted it as the second JoJo TV season, and this first half aired in Japan starting in April 2014.
The story starts in Japan in the late 1980s. Jotaro Kujo is a tough, quiet high school student who gets into lots of fights. He is in a police cell, and he will not leave. He thinks an evil spirit is living inside him and that it could hurt people. Then his grandfather arrives: Joseph Joestar, the clever hero of the earlier story, now an old man. Joseph brings a friend named Mohammed Avdol, a fortune teller from Cairo.
Joseph explains that the "spirit" is not evil at all. It is a Stand, a kind of power that a person's own fighting spirit can take shape as. A Stand looks like a ghost or a guardian standing next to its owner. Each one has its own special ability. Jotaro's Stand is called Star Platinum, and it is very fast and very strong. Avdol's Stand can control fire.
The trouble is bigger than one boy. An old enemy of the Joestar family, the vampire Dio, has come back after about one hundred years. His return is hurting the whole family. Jotaro's kind mother, Holly, becomes very sick, because a Stand has appeared in her too, and she is too gentle to control it. To save her, the group must find Dio and beat him. Dio is hiding in Egypt, so they set out on a long trip from Japan to Cairo.
Along the way, the team grows. Noriaki Kakyoin, a calm transfer student, is first sent by Dio to attack Jotaro. After Jotaro frees him from Dio's control, Kakyoin joins the group. Jean Pierre Polnareff, a proud French swordsman with a Stand of his own, also joins after a fight. He has a personal reason to be on this trip: he wants to find the man who killed his sister.
The show is built like a road trip. Planes and boats keep getting attacked, so the friends end up crossing Asia by land, through places like India and Pakistan. In almost every stop, a new Stand user sent by Dio is waiting for them. Each enemy has a strange power, so every fight feels like a puzzle. The heroes have to think fast, not just hit hard.
The tone is a mix of serious danger and silly fun. The friends joke and argue, and they eat local food and get lost in new cities. Then the next fight begins. There is some blood and violence, but also lots of style, bold colors, and big music. This half of the journey ends before the group reaches Egypt, and the story goes on in the second half, Battle in Egypt.
