About
Stone Ocean is the sixth part of Hirohiko Araki's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga, which first ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 to 2003. The studio David Production turned it into a 38-episode anime for Netflix. This entry is the first batch of 12 episodes, which came out around the world on December 1, 2021. The later episodes are listed as Stone Ocean Part 2. This season is special for the series, because its main JoJo hero is a young woman.
The story takes place in 2011, near Port St. Lucie, Florida, in the United States. Jolyne Cujoh is the daughter of Jotaro Kujo, the hero of the earlier Stardust Crusaders story. She and her father are not close. Jotaro was away for most of her childhood, and she feels he was never there for her. Now Jolyne is in big trouble. She is sent to Green Dolphin Street Prison for fifteen years for a crime she did not do. She ended up taking the blame for her boyfriend without knowing it.
In prison, something new wakes up inside her. Jolyne gains a Stand, a special power that appears as a ghostly fighter next to its owner. Her Stand is called Stone Free. It lets her unwind parts of her own body into long, strong string. She can use this string to tie up enemies, catch things, listen from far away, and much more. It is a tricky power, and Jolyne learns to use it in clever ways.
Soon after, Jotaro comes to the prison to help his daughter escape. But the visit is a trap. An unknown enemy uses a Stand that can pull a person's memories and powers out of them in the form of discs. Jotaro is left without his memories or his Stand, and he falls into a deep sleep he cannot wake from. Jolyne makes a choice. She will stay and fight to get back what was taken from her father, even if it means facing danger every day.
Jolyne does not fight alone. Emporio Alnino is a young boy who was born inside the prison and knows its secret places. Ermes Costello is a bold fellow inmate who came to the prison with her own plan for revenge. Foo Fighters is one of the strangest friends in JoJo: a group of tiny sea creatures called plankton that can think and act as one person. Weather Report is a calm man who does not remember who he is.
The prison setting makes this season feel closed in and tense. There are guards, rules, and other prisoners with Stands, and Jolyne cannot simply walk away. Each fight is like a puzzle, and the heroes must think fast to win. The story is also about a daughter learning who her father really is. It has the bold style, odd humor, and dramatic poses the series is known for. There is some blood and body horror (scenes where bodies are hurt or changed in disturbing ways), so it suits older viewers. Fans can feel that a much bigger plan is moving behind the prison walls.
