Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters is one of the strangest characters in Stone Ocean, the sixth arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. It begins life as a colony of tiny plankton that Enrico Pucci fuses with a Stand, a kind of fighting spirit, and sets loose to guard a disc holding Jotaro Kujo's stolen power deep within Green Dolphin Street Prison.

At first Foo Fighters is simply an obstacle standing between Jolyne Kuujou and her father's stolen Stand. After Jolyne defeats it in battle, something unexpected happens: rather than being destroyed, Foo Fighters chooses to switch sides and fight alongside her instead, slowly taking on a body and a personality of its own by taking over the corpse of a dead prisoner. The English version of the story refers to Foo Fighters with non-binary pronouns, reflecting its unusual origin as a being that is not strictly male or female, or even strictly one single creature.

Despite starting out as an enemy, Foo Fighters becomes one of the most loyal members of Jolyne's group, caring deeply about protecting its new friends, especially the devoted prisoner Narciso Annasui. When the final battle against Pucci turns deadly, Foo Fighters ultimately gives up its own existence to protect Anasui, a sacrifice that shows how far this strange, plankton-born Stand has come from being a mindless guardian.
