Girls Band Cry is a music drama made by Toei Animation, the studio behind many famous anime. It aired in Japan from April to June 2024 and has 13 episodes. It is part of a larger music project with the companies Agehasprings and Universal Music Japan. That means the songs you hear are not just background. They are a big part of the show, and some of the band's music even made the Japanese album charts. The story takes place in Kawasaki, a city in Kanagawa Prefecture, close to Tokyo. Nina Iseri is a young woman who left high school. She does not fit in at home, and she wants to prove that she can live on her own. So she moves to the city. Her first days are hard, and nothing goes the way she hoped. Then she meets Momoka Kawaragi, a guitar player she has admired for a long time. Momoka used to play in an idol rock band called Diamond Dust. An idol band is a group that sings and performs for fans in a polished, pop style. Nina has a lot of anger and sadness inside her, and she has never found a way to let it out. Singing becomes that way. After they play music together on the street, Nina and Momoka decide to build a real band. Three more girls join them: Subaru Awa on drums, Tomo Ebizuka on keyboards, and Rupa on bass. Each of them comes from a different background, and each has her own problems. The band is called Togenashi Togeari. The name is a play on words and means something like "thornless, thorny". The show is not a soft, sweet story about friends playing songs. It tries to be honest about how hard life can be for young people who want to make music. The creators said they were inspired by the money troubles after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and by the hard time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of this, the series looks at worries about work, family, fear of failing, and the tough side of the music business. Still, the band members slowly become close, like a family they chose for themselves. The main themes are growing up, finding where you belong, and using music to say things that are hard to say with words. The characters are mostly teenage girls and young women, and the show has a strong rock sound. It also uses full 3D computer animation. The characters move in a lively, rough way that fits the band's loud, emotional style. Fans and critics often point to the live-style music scenes as a highlight. The team behind it includes director Kazuo Sakai, writer Jukki Hanada, and composer Kenji Tamai. Outside Japan, the series came to Crunchyroll in November 2024, after an earlier release on Toei's own channels that some fans did not like. Later, two compilation films that retell the TV story were shown in Japanese theaters in the fall of 2025. A manga and a video game have also been made. Girls Band Cry is a good pick if you like stories about bands, rock music, and young people who are unsure about their future. It is serious and emotional, but it also has humor and warm moments between the friends.
