Hongniang

Hongniang is the chief lady-in-waiting at the Jade Pavilion, the home of Consort Gyokuyou in the rear palace of The Apothecary Diaries. Gyokuyou is one of the Emperor's top consorts, and Hongniang is the woman who runs her household and manages the maids who serve her.

When Maomao is moved to the Jade Pavilion to serve as Gyokuyou's food taster, Hongniang becomes her direct boss. She is serious, hardworking, and devoted to her mistress, and she carries a heavy load of duties every day. Even so, she treats the small group of maids under her fairly and keeps a good working bond with them. She soon comes to value Maomao's sharp skills, and her steady leadership helps keep the Jade Pavilion running smoothly.
