Gaoshun

Gaoshun is the loyal attendant and right-hand man of Jinshi, the striking young official who oversees the rear palace in The Apothecary Diaries. He stays close by Jinshi's side, handling tasks, guarding him, and keeping things running smoothly. Jinshi relies on him completely.

Gaoshun is serious, calm, and very proper. He cares a great deal about rank and correct behavior, and he believes people should show respect to those above them. He rarely says what he is thinking out loud, but his face gives him away. When Jinshi or someone else does something he does not approve of, a clear look of displeasure shows on his face, even if he stays silent.

He also quietly supports Maomao, the sharp young apothecary who becomes an important helper to Jinshi. While Jinshi's interest in Maomao often stirs up trouble, Gaoshun keeps a steady head and helps both of them in a low-key way. He is a father as well. His son, Basen, is a very stiff, by-the-book young man.
