The Apothecary Diaries

The Apothecary Diaries is a mystery drama set inside the walls of an emperor's palace. The world is made up, but it is inspired by the Tang dynasty, a famous period of ancient Chinese history. The anime was made by Toho Animation Studio and OLM. Its first season ran for 24 episodes from October 2023 to March 2024. It is based on a light novel series by the author Natsu Hyuuga. A light novel is a Japanese novel for young adults, often with some pictures.

The heroine is Maomao, a young woman with freckles. She grew up in the pleasure district of the capital, the part of the city where the brothels are. There, she was raised by her adoptive father, Luomen, a skilled apothecary. An apothecary is someone who makes and sells medicines. From him, Maomao learned a huge amount about herbs, medicine, and poisons. She is so curious about poisons that she sometimes tests them on herself, just to see what they do.

Then Maomao is kidnapped and sold to work in the rear palace. This is a closed-off part of the palace where the emperor's many wives, called consorts, live with their servants. Maomao plans to keep her head down. She wants to do her simple chores, finish her years of service, and go home. She hides how much she knows. But she soon hears that the emperor's babies are falling sick, and she cannot stay silent. She leaves a quiet warning, hoping no one will find out it came from her.

Someone does find out. Jinshi is a very beautiful young man who manages the rear palace. Almost everyone who sees him falls under his charm, but Maomao is not impressed at all, and he finds that fascinating. Jinshi soon learns what she can do, and he starts sending her to solve strange cases. She becomes a lady-in-waiting and food taster for Gyokuyou, the emperor's favorite consort. Gyokuyou is a kind woman with bright red hair and green eyes. Gaoshun, Jinshi's calm and loyal helper, often follows them. Each case, whether a poisoning, a ghost story, or a strange illness, has a clever, science-based answer.

The tone is a pleasant mix. Many episodes work like short detective stories. There is also court politics and danger, since everyone in the palace is fighting for power. The funny, slow-growing bond between Maomao and Jinshi adds light comedy and a hint of romance. Maomao's dry, blunt attitude makes her a very fun heroine to watch.

The franchise is a giant success. Its books and manga have sold over 57 million copies. A second anime season aired in 2025, and more seasons and a movie are planned.
