The Cat and the Dragon

The Cat and the Dragon is a gentle fantasy anime from summer 2026 about a fearsome beast who loves cats more than anything. It is based on a light novel series by Amara, with art by Mai Okuma. The story was first posted on the website Shosetsuka ni Naro and then published by Takarajimasha starting in 2016. There is also a manga version by Izumi Sasaki. The series has sold more than 1 million copies. The anime was made by OLM, directed by Oh Jin-Koo, with series composition by Mitsutaka Hirota and music by Takahiro Obata. The opening song is sung by Suis of the band Yorushika, and Lia sings the ending. It has 12 parts and streams on Crunchyroll. A season 2 is planned for 2027.

The story begins in a cave where a family of cats lives. One day, a dragon egg hatches among them. The mama cat does not chase the baby away. Instead, she treats him as one of her own kittens and brings him up with love. The dragon grows into a huge and powerful creature, but in his heart, he still sees himself as part of the cat family. When his feline siblings grow up and go their own ways, he makes a promise to keep them safe.

The dragon has a dark side, too. He once saw people hunting cats for their fur. In his fury, he struck back at the hunters. Because of this, he does not trust people and keeps away from them. The cats, however, see him differently. To them, he is simply "Uncle Wing," a big, kind relative who is always watching out for them.

Most of the show follows the lives of the many cats in his care, told in short, calm stories. One brave little cat sets off on a journey with a young prince. Another lives in a busy town and enjoys sitting and watching the people who pass by. Others have their own small problems, friendships, and discoveries. The dragon watches over all of them. Through their eyes and their lives, he slowly starts to see that people are not all bad, and his heart begins to soften.

The show is a relaxing and warm watch. It is often called iyashikei, a Japanese word for stories that feel calm and healing. The themes include found family, which means a family made by love instead of birth, as well as being a parent, forgiveness, and learning to trust again. There is some sadness, and the dragon's anger is real. But the main mood is cozy and kind. It is a good choice for animal lovers and for anyone who wants a soft fantasy story to enjoy.
