About
This is the second half of Re:ZERO's second season. It aired in winter 2021, from January 6 to March 24, with 12 episodes. Studio White Fox made it, and it adapts volumes 13 to 15 of Tappei Nagatsuki's light novels. It follows straight on from Part 1, which ended in summer 2020, so you need to watch that part first. Together, the two halves tell the full story of the Sanctuary.
A quick reminder of the setup: Subaru Natsuki is a young man from Japan who was pulled into a fantasy world. He has a secret. When he dies, time goes back to an earlier point and he gets another chance. Only he keeps the memories of what happened. In Part 1, Subaru, Emilia, and their friends went to the Sanctuary, a closed-off village full of secrets. There he met the sly Witch of Greed, Echidna, and the hot-headed fighter Garfiel Tinsel. Things went very badly, more than once.
As Part 2 begins, Subaru is close to breaking. Help comes from an unexpected friend. Otto Suwen, the merchant who has been dragged into Subaru's problems again and again, gives him a speech that changes his outlook. After that, Subaru makes up his mind: he will get through this stretch of time and protect as many people as he can, not just one or two.
His first big task is to help Emilia. The Sanctuary has a set of trials that make a person face their own past, and Emilia must take them. That is very hard for her. She feels that people have let her down all her life, and she finds it difficult to trust anyone, even Subaru. So the show spends a lot of time on her old memories and her slow steps toward being braver. At the same time, Subaru has to deal with Garfiel, with the hidden plans of Roswaal, the noble who backs Emilia, and with trouble back at the mansion. Many story threads from Part 1 come together here.
This part is full of strong feelings. There are tense fights, but many of the most important scenes are quiet talks between two people. The show asks big questions in simple ways: Can you forgive yourself? Can you trust someone after being hurt? What does it mean to really know a person? Subaru also grows a lot here. He stops trying to carry everything alone and starts to lean on his friends. Some scenes are scary or violent, so it fits older teens and adults best.
The music is again by Kenichiro Suehiro, and Masaharu Watanabe directs. On MyAnimeList, this part scores around 8.4 out of 10, and over a million members have added it to their lists. It is the payoff for the long and painful Sanctuary story that Part 1 set up.
