Otto Suwen

Otto Suwen is a traveling merchant who crosses paths with Subaru Natsuki during one of Subaru's lowest moments, when he is drunk and feeling hopeless. Despite his nervous, easily-frightened personality, Otto turns out to be dependable and loyal once someone earns his trust, and the two become unlikely friends.

Otto has an unusual gift: he can communicate with animals, plants, and other living things that most people cannot talk to at all. Rather than being seen as a wonder, this talent makes people around him uneasy, since they do not understand it and tend to assume the worst about him. Because he is so often misunderstood himself, Otto feels real sympathy for Emilia, who faces constant suspicion and prejudice for being a half-elf.

That shared experience is part of why Otto becomes one of Emilia's strongest supporters when she enters the contest to become the next ruler of the kingdom, eventually joining her camp completely. Though he often panics or complains when trouble appears, which happens constantly due to his incredible bad luck, Otto's quick thinking and merchant's wit usually find a way to pull him through danger.
