About
In October 2020, the film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train opened in Japanese theaters and became a giant hit. About a year later, studio ufotable turned that film into a short TV series so that home viewers could follow the story week by week. This TV version has 7 episodes. It aired on Fuji Television from October 10 to November 28, 2021, as the first part of the show's second season, and it later ran in English on Adult Swim's Toonami block in late 2023. It adapts chapters 54 to 66 of Koyoharu Gotouge's manga.
The opening episode is a brand-new story made only for the anime. It follows Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira. The Hashira are the strongest swordsmen in the group of demon hunters at the center of the show. Before the main story begins, Rengoku stops at a train yard, where a weaker demon has been scaring the workers and is going after an old woman and her granddaughter. This episode shows Rengoku's bright, loud, and caring personality, and it helps viewers get to know him before the big events to come.
The rest of the series retells the film, with some extra and changed material. Tanjiro Kamado, a gentle boy who fights demons to protect people and to save his sister Nezuko, boards a steam train with his friends. Zenitsu Agatsuma is a nervous, easily scared boy who becomes very strong when he falls asleep. Inosuke Hashibira is a wild fighter who wears a boar's head as a mask. They join Rengoku, because many people have vanished while riding this train, and several demon hunters who went to look into it never came back.
The danger on board is a demon named Enmu, one of Muzan Kibutsuji's Twelve Kizuki, his most powerful demon followers. Enmu can trap people inside dreams. He uses sweet, happy dreams so that his victims do not want to wake up. While the heroes are lost in their own dreams, the train itself becomes a trap that threatens everyone on it, around two hundred people. Tanjiro must find a way to break free and protect them all, while Nezuko and the others fight at his side.
The Mugen Train story is known for its strong feelings. It looks at loss, at the pull of happy memories, and at the duty to keep moving forward even when life hurts. Rengoku's sense of duty and his kindness to the younger fighters have made him one of the best-loved characters in the series. ufotable's animation, with its bright flame effects and fast camera work, makes the fights exciting. For people who have already seen the film, the TV version offers the new Rengoku episode and a chance to enjoy the story again in smaller parts. For those who have not, it is an easy way to catch up before the Entertainment District Arc that comes next.
