About
Hashira Training Arc is the fourth season of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba anime, made by studio ufotable with Haruo Sotozaki as director. It is a short season of 8 episodes that aired from May 12 to June 30, 2024, and it opened and closed with longer-than-usual episodes. It adapts chapters 128 to 139 of Koyoharu Gotouge's manga. Unlike earlier seasons, it is not built around one huge fight. Instead, it is a calm before the storm, a quieter time when the heroes get ready for the war they know is coming.
For new viewers, the show follows Tanjiro Kamado, a kind young man in early 1900s Japan. Demons, people turned into monsters who eat humans, killed his family and changed his sister Nezuko into one of them. Tanjiro joined a secret group of demon hunters to protect others and to find a cure for her. The top fighters of the group are called Hashira, which roughly means "pillars," because they hold the group up.
At the start of this season, the group has just come out of a string of hard fights against Muzan Kibutsuji's strongest demons. The Ubuyashiki family, who lead the hunters, decide it is time to prepare for a final clash with Muzan himself. So the Hashira set up a special camp. Each one creates a training course based on his or her own skills, and the regular swordsmen must move from one course to the next, getting stronger at every stop.
Tanjiro goes through these lessons one by one, and each stop lets the show spend time with a different Hashira. Some lessons build stamina and speed, while others work on bending the body or using the sword with perfect control. The training is tough, and sometimes funny, as the young fighters groan and complain. But it also shows a softer side of characters who usually look cold or scary. Tanjiro tries to reach out to the silent Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka, who keeps himself apart from the others. He also has to face the hot-tempered Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa, and the gentle but enormously strong Stone Hashira Gyomei Himejima, whose training is the hardest of all.
The heart of the season is the bond between people. Many of the Hashira carry painful pasts, and these episodes let viewers understand them better. Themes include teamwork, trust, healing from old wounds, and the quiet courage it takes to keep going. Some fans wished for more action, but others liked the slower pace and the warm character moments. ufotable's animation stays polished throughout. The season ends by setting up the long-awaited final part of the story, which continues in the Infinity Castle films.
