Giyuu Tomioka holds the rank of Water Hashira, one of the strongest swordsmen in the Demon Slayer Corps, yet he carries himself like a man who does not believe he deserves the title. He rarely shows emotion and keeps most people at a distance, which makes him seem cold, but the quiet hides deep guilt rather than arrogance.
That guilt goes back to his final exam as a trainee, when his best friend Sabito gave his life clearing a path through demons so Giyuu could pass. Giyuu felt he had taken a place he had not earned, and he built his own version of the Water Breathing style afterward, never fully trusting his own skill even as he rose through the ranks.
His path crosses with Tanjiro Kamado when he finds Tanjiro's demon sister, Nezuko, protecting her brother instead of attacking him. Moved by this, Giyuu chooses to spare her rather than kill her on sight, and sends Tanjiro to train with his own former teacher. That one decision sets the whole story in motion.
In the Corps' last fight against the demon leader Muzan's strongest followers, Giyuu stands alongside Shinobu Kochou and other Hashira against the demon Akaza, and later joins the final assault on Muzan himself, losing an arm in the process. Despite his losses, he never stops showing up for his comrades, quietly proving the loyalty his blunt manner usually hides.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is a 2025 anime film and one of the biggest anime releases ever. It opened in Japan on July 18, 2025, and in the United States on September 12, 2025. Studio Ufotable made it, and Haruo Sotozaki directed it. It is the first movie in a planned trilogy that will finish the story. The trilogy was announced in June 2024, right after the fourth TV season, Hashira Training, ended. The films adapt the Infinity Castle arc, the final part of Koyoharu Gotouge's manga. The series follows Tanjiro Kamado, a kind boy from the mountains. A demon attacked his family, and his little sister Nezuko was turned into a demon herself. To find a way to save her, Tanjiro joined the Demon Slayer Corps, a secret group of sword fighters who hunt demons. On his journey, he became close friends with two other young fighters: the nervous but fast Zenitsu Agatsuma and the wild Inosuke Hashibira. He also fought next to the Hashira. These are the strongest swordsmen in the Corps, each named after a style, like Water or Flame. The movie starts at a moment of great danger. Muzan Kibutsuji, the first and most powerful demon, attacks the home of the Corps' leader. When Tanjiro and the Hashira rush to help, Muzan pulls them all into his secret base, the Infinity Castle. This is a huge, twisting fortress that exists in its own space. Its rooms, stairs, and hallways can shift and change. Inside, the fighters are split up. They must battle through crowds of demons as they search for Muzan. The most dangerous enemies are the Upper Ranks, Muzan's strongest followers. Two of them are central to this film. Akaza is a demon who fights with his fists and has history with Tanjiro. Doma is a cheerful but cruel demon who uses ice. Hashira such as Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, and Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira, take on key roles, while Zenitsu faces a battle of his own. The film also uses flashbacks to show the past of some characters, including the demons. As with the TV series, the animation is the big draw. Ufotable mixes hand-drawn art with computer effects to create bright, flowing sword attacks and huge, detailed sets. The movie is full of action, but it is also sad and emotional. It shows loss, loyalty, and the high cost of the war between humans and demons. The film broke many records. It had the best opening weekend ever in Japan and earned about 820 million US dollars around the world, making it the highest-grossing Japanese film. In the US, it had the biggest opening for any international film. Critics mostly praised its visuals and action, though some felt the many flashbacks slowed the pace. It won Film of the Year at the 10th Crunchyroll Anime Awards and the Japan Academy Film Prize for Animation of the Year.
