Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki

Bottom-tier Character Tomozaki began as a light novel series by Yuki Yaku, with art by Fly. Shogakukan has published it in Japan since May 2016 under its Gagaga Bunko label, and Yen Press sells it in English. A light novel is a short Japanese novel for young adults, usually with anime-style pictures. The first anime season was made by the studio Project No.9, directed by Shinsuke Yanagi and written by Fumihiko Shimo. It ran for 12 episodes from January to March 2021.

The main character, Fumiya Tomozaki, lives two very different lives. Online, he is a legend. In a fighting game called Attack Families, he plays under the name "nanashi" and is the number one player in all of Japan. At school, though, he is a nobody. He has almost no friends, he dresses badly, he mumbles, and he thinks real life is a bad game with unfair rules that he can never win.

Everything changes when Tomozaki agrees to meet the number two player in the country, a rival who goes by "NO NAME." To his shock, NO NAME turns out to be Aoi Hinami, his classmate. Hinami seems perfect. She has top grades, she is great at sports, and everyone at school likes her. She is upset to hear that a player she respects has given up on life so easily.

Hinami makes Tomozaki an offer. She believes life is the best game there is, and that it can be learned with practice, just like Attack Families. She will be his guide, a kind of "walkthrough," which is a gamer word for step-by-step instructions on how to beat a game. She gives him daily tasks, like smiling more, standing up straight, starting conversations, and joining group talks. Bit by bit, Tomozaki starts to level up as a person.

Along the way he gets to know more classmates. Fuka Kikuchi is a quiet girl who loves books and bonds with him over reading. Minami Nanami, called Mimimi, is a cheerful track club member who hides her own worries. Hanabi Natsubayashi, called Tama, is blunt and honest. Takahiro Mizusawa is a smooth talker whom Tomozaki admires and learns from, and Yuzu Izumi is a friendly, caring girl with a crush of her own.

The show mixes romantic comedy with a gentle story about growing up. It is funny when Tomozaki fails his missions, but it also asks real questions. Can social skills be practiced like a game? And is the "perfect" Hinami as happy as she looks? For anyone who has ever felt awkward or left out, the series offers warmth, humor, and hope.
