About
Sudachi no Maoujou, also called The Fledgling Demon Lord's Starter Shop, is a fantasy comedy that asks a funny question: what happens to a normal fantasy world after the big story is already over? It is based on a manga written and drawn by Makoto Morishita, the artist behind I'm Great Priest Imhotep. The manga started in October 2021 in Monthly Shonen Magazine, a manga magazine from the publisher Kodansha, and it has reached more than ten volumes. The TV anime is set to start in January 2027.
In most fantasy stories, a hero goes on a long journey to beat an evil demon lord. Along the way, the hero buys healing potions, weapons, and other useful items from small shops in each town. This story begins after that journey has ended. The hero has won, the demon lord is gone, and the whole world is calm and safe. For most people, that is wonderful news. For one young shopkeeper, it is a real problem.
The main character is a boy simply called Murabito, a Japanese word that means "villager." His name is a joke about the nameless villagers found in role-playing video games. He runs a small item shop called The Nest in a starting village, the kind of first town where new adventurers begin their quest. Now that there are no monsters to fight, nobody needs potions or gear. Customers stop coming, the shelves stay full, and Murabito starts to fear that he will have to close his shop for good.
Things change when a strange girl named Mao appears in his life. Who she really is, and why she has come, is part of the mystery that drives the story, and her arrival turns Murabito's quiet and empty days upside down. Much of the fun comes from watching an ordinary, hard-working shopkeeper deal with a world that has run out of adventure, and from the odd pair that he and Mao make together.
The series mixes action, adventure, comedy, and fantasy, and it is written for a shonen audience, which means it is aimed mostly at teenage boys but is easy for anyone to enjoy. Its humor plays with the habits of classic fantasy games, such as hero quests, starting towns, and item shops, and looks at them from the side of the little people who usually stay in the background. Fans of light, playful fantasy stories should find a lot to like here.
The anime is made by the studio project No.9. Jun Hira is the director, Keiichirou Ouchi writes the series scripts, and Katsuyuki Sato designs the characters. Takurou Iga composes the music. In the voice cast, Reiji Kawashima plays Murabito and Rumi Ookubo plays Mao. The official website shared a teaser video and a key visual when the anime was announced in June 2026.
