Iharu Furuhashi owes his entire career in the Defense Force to a single moment from his childhood: as a middle schooler, he was saved from a kaiju attack by Mina Ashiro, an experience that convinced him to dedicate his life to protecting others the way she protected him.
Years later, Iharu becomes a young officer in the Third Division, serving alongside the very person who once saved him, along with new friends like Kafka Hibino and Reno Ichikawa. He performed strongly enough during the entrance selection process to earn his spot among the Defense Force's new recruits, proving that his motivation was more than just gratitude.
After the Third Division's base is destroyed in a devastating kaiju attack, Iharu is transferred to the Fourth Division, continuing his service elsewhere while his old unit rebuilds. Though less flashy than some of his more famous colleagues, Iharu's steady dedication and personal debt to Mina make him one of the Defense Force's most quietly determined fighters. Later training under a veteran captain helps him unlock a new level of combat strength, letting him finally fight on more even footing with the threats he once could only run from.

Kaiju No. 8 is the TV anime of a hit web manga by Naoya Matsumoto. The manga ran on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ app from July 2020 to July 2025. It ended after 129 chapters, collected in 16 books. The anime is made by Production I.G. Studio Khara, the studio famous for Evangelion, helped design the monsters. Shigeyuki Miya and Tomomi Kamiya directed this first season. It aired on TV Tokyo from April to June 2024, and Crunchyroll streamed it around the world. The story takes place in a Japan that is attacked by kaiju again and again. A kaiju is a giant monster, like Godzilla. In this world, Japan suffers more of these attacks than any other country. To protect people, the country has a special army called the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. Its soldiers wear powered suits. These suits are built from the remains of monsters that were already killed. When a battle ends, the huge bodies are still lying in the streets. Someone has to clean them up, and that dirty, smelly job is where our hero works. That hero is Kafka Hibino. He is 32 years old, which is old for a shonen lead. (Shonen means stories aimed mainly at teenage boys.) As a child, Kafka made a promise with his friend Mina Ashiro. The two of them would fight kaiju together. Mina kept her side of the deal. She is now a famous captain of the Third Division. Kafka failed the entry exam many times and gave up. Now he spends his days cutting up monster bodies. His young coworker, Reno Ichikawa, also wants to join the Defense Force. Reno's drive helps wake up Kafka's old dream. Then everything changes. A small, strange creature gets inside Kafka's body. After that, he can turn into a human-shaped monster with enormous strength. The Defense Force gives this unknown monster a code name: Kaiju No. 8. Kafka now has a secret that could get him killed. He still wants to join the very army that hunts creatures like him. So he tries out for the force again, hiding what he has become. During the test he meets Kikoru Shinomiya, a gifted young fighter from a powerful family. He also meets Soshiro Hoshina, a sharp vice-captain who later helps train him. The show mixes big action with a lot of comedy. Kafka is clumsy, kind, and often silly. His monster form looks scary, but he uses it to save people. The series asks simple but strong questions. Is it too late to chase a dream in your thirties? Can someone be trusted if he is part monster? Much of the fun comes from the gap between his ordinary-guy personality and his huge power. Work and teamwork also matter a lot. The cleanup crew and the soldiers both get respect, and most of the cast are adults with jobs. The manga won the Next Manga Award for web manga in 2021. It was also nominated for an Eisner Award in 2022, a major comics prize in the United States. By 2026 it had more than 20 million copies in print. Many critics compared its monster-fighting style to the classic hero show Ultraman. Reviews of the anime praised its action scenes, animation, and world-building. Some viewers felt the character designs were a little plain. This first season sets up Kafka's double life and the people around him. A second season and a final part followed.
