Gen Narumi holds the title of Japan's strongest fighter against kaiju, leading the elite First Division of the Defense Force as its captain. That reputation might surprise anyone who meets him off the battlefield, since Narumi spends much of his free time obsessing over social media followers, video games, and his collection of action figures, acting more like an overgrown kid than Japan's top defender.
His casual, sometimes rude attitude toward other people can make him seem unserious, especially compared to more traditional officers. Underneath that laziness, though, Narumi takes his actual job extremely seriously. He judges everyone under his command purely by skill and results, showing little patience for excuses, and he expects every member of the First Division to meet the same high standard he holds himself to in battle.
When Kafka Hibino and Kikoru Shinomiya are transferred into the First Division after their original base is destroyed, they find themselves serving under a captain whose personality is almost comically laid-back but whose combat ability backs up every bit of his fearsome reputation. Narumi's blunt honesty, paired with genuine respect for strength, quickly earns him the grudging trust of the new recruits placed under his command.

This is the second season of Kaiju No. 8, the monster action anime from Production I.G. It is based on the manga by Naoya Matsumoto, which ran on Shonen Jump+ from 2020 to 2025. The new season aired from July to September 2025, about a year after the first one ended. Studio Khara again worked on the monster designs, and Yuichiro Kido wrote the scripts. Crunchyroll streamed it worldwide, with dubs in several languages. Viewers should watch season one first, because this part picks up right where it stopped. A quick reminder of the setup: Kafka Hibino is a 32-year-old man. A strange creature merged with his body and gave him the power to become a giant-strength monster. The army calls this monster Kaiju No. 8. (A kaiju is a huge monster, like Godzilla.) Kafka joined Japan's Anti-Kaiju Defense Force while hiding this secret. At the end of season one, his secret came out. That left the army with a hard question. What do you do with a monster that wants to protect people? At the start of this season, the army has held Kafka under watch. Its leaders still cannot agree on him. In the end they decide to use his power instead of destroying it. He is moved to the First Division. That is the strongest unit in the whole force. Its captain is Gen Narumi, a top fighter. Narumi is lazy and childish when he is off duty, but he is deadly in battle. Kafka's friend Kikoru Shinomiya also joins the First Division. Many soldiers still do not trust Kafka. He knows that he has to earn his place, one mission at a time. The danger soon grows. A large swarm of insect-like kaiju attacks. The First Division is sent to stop it. With Kikoru and Narumi leading the fight, things go well at first. Then Kafka's body stops working the way he needs it to. He cannot change into his monster form. At this weak moment, an old enemy steps in. Kaiju No. 9 is a clever, talking monster that can steal and copy the power of others. It wants Kafka's strength for itself. Kafka and his team must find a way to survive. This season feels darker and heavier than the first. There is more blood and some scary body horror, meaning bodies that twist and change in upsetting ways. There are also bigger battles across the city. Still, the humor has not gone away. Narumi's silly side and Kafka's honest, goofy nature keep the mood from getting too grim. The main heart of the story stays the same. Kafka still wants to stand beside his childhood friend Mina Ashiro, now captain of the Third Division, just as they once promised. Kikoru and Kafka's old coworker Reno Ichikawa also keep growing as fighters, and each one faces a personal test. The anime as a whole has been praised for its action and animation. Some critics did say the character designs looked plain, especially in this season. The manga is a big seller too, with over 20 million copies in print by 2026. After this season ended, a final part of the anime was announced at the Jump Festa 2026 event. It will tell the rest of the story.
