Fern

Fern is a gifted magic user who travels with Frieren as her student. When she was a small child, fighting in her home region took her parents from her. Alone and without hope, she was about to end her life when the priest Heiter found her and stopped her. He took her in and raised her like a daughter. Heiter also began to teach her magic, and she practiced very hard for years so she could be useful to him.

When Frieren came to visit, Heiter asked the elf to train Fern. After Heiter died, Fern left with Frieren on a long trip north. Fern is serious, calm, and very responsible. She often acts like the grown-up of the group. She has to drag Frieren out of bed in the morning, and she scolds her teacher when she wastes time. She can pout when she is upset, but she is loyal and caring.

Fern's greatest strength is speed. She can cast simple attack spells very fast, and she learned from Frieren how to hide how much magic power she has. Later the warrior Stark joins them. At first she treats him coldly, but over their travels the two grow very close, and their shy, awkward bond becomes an important part of the story. She also goes on to pass the hard exam to become a first-class mage.
