Atsushi Nakajima

Atsushi Nakajima spent his childhood in an abusive orphanage, where the caretakers treated him cruelly and eventually threw him out once he turned eighteen, telling him he was simply too old to stay. With nowhere to go and no one who wanted him, Atsushi arrived in Yokohama starving and without hope, until Osamu Dazai found him and brought him into the Armed Detective Agency.

That harsh upbringing left Atsushi deeply insecure, convinced for a long time that he was useless and unwanted. Over the course of the story, the kindness of his new friends slowly helps him build real confidence in himself. Despite his self-doubt, Atsushi is remarkably selfless, often putting himself in danger without hesitation to protect people he barely knows.

His most complicated relationship is with Ryuunosuke Akutagawa, a Port Mafia fighter who resents how easily Atsushi earned Dazai's trust. The two start out as bitter rivals, but their shared history with Dazai eventually pushes them to work together when it truly matters. Atsushi also forms close, caring friendships with fellow Agency members, offering some of them the same second chance at belonging that he himself was once given.
