About
Bleach is one of the big action anime of the 2000s. It is based on the manga by Tite Kubo, and it was made by Studio Pierrot under director Noriyuki Abe. The show ran on TV Tokyo in Japan from October 2004 to March 2012. In that time it reached 366 episodes. In the United States, many fans first found it on Adult Swim, which aired the English dub from 2006 to 2014.
The story is set in Karakura Town, a normal Japanese town with a secret. Ichigo Kurosaki is a teenager with spiky orange hair and a short temper. He has always been able to see spirits of the dead. Most of the time he just puts up with them. Then one night he meets Rukia Kuchiki. She is a Soul Reaper, or Shinigami in Japanese. Soul Reapers are warriors who guide lost souls to the afterlife and fight Hollows. Hollows are evil spirits with white masks that hunt human souls for food.
When a Hollow attacks Ichigo's home, Rukia is badly hurt while protecting him. To save his family, she gives Ichigo her own powers. The plan is only meant to last a short time. But Rukia cannot get her power back quickly, so Ichigo has to do her job. He goes to school in the day. At night he leaves his body behind and fights monsters with a huge sword. Rukia stays close, living in his world and teaching him the rules.
Ichigo is not alone for long. Several of his classmates turn out to have special powers too. Orihime Inoue is a kind and cheerful girl with gentle healing and shield powers. Uryu Ishida is a proud Quincy, a member of a group of spirit archers who do not get along with Soul Reapers. Yasutora Sado, called Chad, is a quiet, very strong boy with a powerful arm. A strange shop owner named Kisuke Urahara, who was once a Soul Reaper himself, helps them with advice and training. Later, Ichigo also meets Renji Abarai, a tough Soul Reaper with a long history with Rukia.
The early story grows much bigger than fighting monsters in one town. Breaking Soul Reaper law has consequences, and the group is pulled into Soul Society, the home world of the Soul Reapers. There, Ichigo faces powerful captains, each with a special sword called a Zanpakuto. These swords have their own spirits and names. Learning to work with his sword is a big part of how Ichigo grows stronger.
Bleach is known for its stylish sword fights, its cool character designs, and its very large cast. It also mixes action with comedy, friendship, and quiet talks about life and death. Because the anime moved faster than the manga, it also added original story arcs made only for TV, such as the Bount arc and the Zanpakuto Rebellion arc. Some fans love these side stories, while others skip them.
The show was very popular. In a 2006 TV Asahi poll of Japan's favorite anime, it placed seventh. After the series ended in 2012, the manga's final arc was later adapted as Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, which began in 2022. For new viewers, the original series is the place to start: a long, exciting ride about a boy who takes on a duty he never asked for and decides to protect the people around him.
