About
Ascendance of a Bookworm is one of the best-loved fantasy stories of the last decade. It was written by Miya Kazuki, first as a free web novel on the site Shousetsuka ni Narou from 2013 to 2017, and then as a light novel series from TO Books with art by You Shiina. A light novel is a Japanese novel for young adults with anime-style pictures. J-Novel Club publishes it in English. By August 2026, the whole franchise had sold more than 14 million copies, and it has reached the Hall of Fame in the famous "Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi!" rankings.
The story is split into five big parts. The first anime seasons, made by studio Ajia-do from 2019 to 2022, covered Parts 1 and 2. Wit Studio then took over and adapted Part 3, "Adopted Daughter of an Archduke," in 2026. On October 3, 2026, right after that season ended, the staff announced that Part 4 would also get a TV anime, again from Wit Studio. Its English title is "Founder of the Royal Academy's So-Called Library Committee." No premiere date or new cast has been shared yet.
For new viewers, here is the starting idea. Urano is a young woman in modern Japan who loves books more than anything. She dies in an accident and wakes up in another world as Myne, a sickly five-year-old girl in a poor family. In this world, books are rare, hand-made, and very expensive, so only rich nobles own them. Myne cannot stand a life without reading, so she decides to make books herself, starting with paper and later printing.
The story is famous for its slow, careful build. Myne uses what she remembers from modern Japan to invent new things, and each step pulls her higher in a strict society split between common people and nobles. By the end of Part 3, she has entered the noble world under a new name, Rozemyne, with new duties and dangers.
Part 4 moves her to the Royal Academy, a school where young nobles from across the country study magic and learn how to live in high society. True to her nature, Myne is mostly excited about one thing there: the library. Without spoiling events, this part brings school life, new classmates from other regions, and noble politics that are bigger and more complex than before.
The series mixes fantasy, slice of life, and a deep love of books and learning. Fans of thoughtful world-building and a determined heroine will be glad the story continues.
