Attack on Titan Season 3

Attack on Titan Season 3 is the third TV season of the anime based on Hajime Isayama's manga. Wit Studio made it, with Tetsuro Araki as chief director and Masashi Koizuka as director. This entry covers Part 1, a run of 12 episodes that aired in Japan from July to October 2018. A second part of 10 episodes came out in spring 2019 and has its own page. Together, the two parts adapt chapters 51 to 90 of the manga.

The first two seasons were mostly about the Titans. These are giant, human-shaped creatures that eat people. For more than a hundred years, what is left of humanity has lived behind three huge walls to stay safe from them. Season 3 changes the focus in a big way. This time, the most dangerous enemies are not outside the walls. They are inside, in the royal government and in the Military Police, the soldiers who are supposed to guard the king.

The story picks up soon after the rescue at the end of Season 2. Eren Yeager can turn into a Titan, and he may hold a power that no one fully understands yet. His classmate Historia Reiss has a family name with a hidden meaning. The people in charge want both of them handed over. Captain Levi, the strongest fighter in the Survey Corps, is told to lead a new team that will hide and protect them. Eren's friends Mikasa, Armin, Jean, Connie and Sasha join this team. Commander Erwin Smith, the head of the Survey Corps, starts to believe that the government has lied to the people for a very long time.

Soon the Survey Corps is treated as an enemy of the state. A church leader who knew secrets about the walls is found dead, and it is clear someone powerful wanted him silent. The soldiers must run, hide, and fight other humans instead of monsters. This is hard for them. Fighting a Titan is terrifying, but pointing a weapon at another person feels very different. A new villain makes things worse. Kenny Ackerman is a feared killer who now leads a special Military Police unit. He knew Levi when Levi was a child in the underground city, and his skill in battle makes him a deadly match for the squad.

Because of this, Part 1 feels more like a political thriller than a monster show. There are secret meetings, chases through city streets, and questions about who really has the right to rule. At the same time, Eren struggles with his Titan form, which does not work the way he wants it to. Historia has to face her past and decide who she wants to be, instead of the person others have told her to be. The show asks what makes a good leader, and whether people should obey a system that hides the truth from them.

The season keeps the fast action the series is known for. Soldiers fly between buildings on wires, using a device called vertical maneuvering equipment (a set of gas-powered hooks and blades worn on the body). But it also slows down to explore family history and the early life of Levi. For fans, it answers many questions that the earlier seasons only hinted at. For new viewers, it is best watched after the first two seasons, since it builds directly on what happened there.
