About
Hell's Paradise, known in Japan as Jigokuraku, is a dark and bloody adventure set in old Japan. It is based on a manga by Yuji Kaku that ran on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ app from 2018 to 2021. By 2018 it was already the most popular series on that app, and more than 6.5 million copies are now in print. The anime was made by the well-known studio MAPPA and directed by Kaori Makita. This first season has thirteen episodes and aired on TV Tokyo from April to July 2023. A second season followed in early 2026.
The story is set in the late Edo period. This was the long time when Japan was ruled by a military leader called the shogun. The shogun has heard about a far-off island named Shinsenkyo. People say it is a kind of heaven on earth, and that an elixir, a magic drink that makes you live forever, can be found there. Many search teams have gone to the island. Almost none have come back, and the few who did were badly changed.
So the shogun's government tries a new plan. It sends criminals who are already set to be put to death. Any prisoner who brings the elixir back will be freed. One of them is Gabimaru, called "the Hollow." He was once the top killer of Iwagakure, a hidden village of shinobi, which is another word for ninja. He seems cold and empty, and strangely, every attempt to execute him has failed. What he really wants is to go home to his wife. Each prisoner is watched by a member of the Yamada Asaemon clan, a family of official executioners. Gabimaru's guard is Sagiri, a young woman who is skilled with a sword but unsure about the job she was born into.
Once they land, the island is nothing like a paradise. It is bright and full of flowers, but it is also full of strange monsters, odd statues, and powerful beings who seem to rule the place. The other prisoners are just as dangerous, and many of them will turn on each other to win their freedom. The show mixes sword fights, ninja tricks, and survival with horror and mystery about what the island really is.
At its core, though, the series is about people. Gabimaru has been taught his whole life to feel nothing, and his bond with Sagiri slowly shows him who he is underneath. Sagiri, in turn, struggles with what it means to take a life. Critics have praised the action, the cast, and the partnership between these two. The art of the manga has even been compared to horror master Junji Ito. Be aware that the show has a lot of blood and some disturbing body horror. For older viewers who enjoy dark fantasy, history, and strong action, Hell's Paradise is a tense and memorable ride.
