About
The second and last part of the final Attack on Titan special first aired on Japanese TV on November 5, 2023. It runs about one hour and twenty-five minutes with no ad breaks, so it feels like a full movie. Studio MAPPA made it. It wraps up a story that began in 2013 and that many people around the world followed for ten years. Please watch the earlier seasons and the first special before this one, because nearly every scene depends on what came before.
The place where much of the action takes place is a Marleyan base called Fort Salta. Many refugees from the town of Liberio gathered there, hoping to be safe. Their hope is fragile, because the giant Titans of the Rumbling, a huge march of walking monsters that crush everything, are heading their way. For these people, the fort is both a refuge and a trap. The special shows what it is like to stand before something so large that no wall can stop it.
The heroes arrive to help. Mikasa Ackerman, Armin Arlert, Jean, Connie, Reiner, Pieck, and Captain Levi have escaped a near disaster, and they are tired and hurt. Still, they choose to fight. The group includes people who were once enemies. Reiner and Pieck, for example, came from the other side of the war. Seeing them fight together with the Scouts shows how far the story has come.
At the center of the story is a clash between old friends. Eren Yeager believes he is saving his home, yet his path hurts almost everyone else. Armin and Mikasa have to face him, and they have to do it without losing their hope. The film mixes loud, huge battles with quiet talks between characters, where they finally say what they have kept hidden for years. Those slow moments are just as important as the fights.
The tone is heavy and emotional. The series has always been about hate that passes from one group to another, about freedom, and about the price of choices. In this last part, those ideas come together. It also raises a question the story has asked from the beginning: can a person who is willing to do terrible things for a good reason still be understood by those who love them?
The action is bold, with large Titans, flying soldiers, and fast, dramatic motion. There is strong violence, so it is not for young viewers. Fans praise how the studio used music, color, and big scenes to give the ending a feel of both sadness and relief.
Later, this special was also split into episodes and added to streaming services, so people could watch it in shorter parts. For the many fans who stayed with the story to the end, it is the moment the long journey comes to a close.
