Toyoto Kogiso, who wrote Detective Conan episodes for nearly two decades, has died at 69
The Writers Guild of Japan reported that the screenwriter, whose career began in 1980 on the police drama Taiyo ni Hoero!, died on September 29. No cause of death was given.
The Writers Guild of Japan has reported the death of one of its members, the television writer Toyoto Kogiso. In a notice posted to its website on October 19, the guild said he passed away on September 29, aged 69, and extended its sympathies; it gave no cause. Japanese outlets carried the news over the following days.
Anime viewers will know his name from Detective Conan. Kogiso contributed scripts to TMS Entertainment's long-running TV series, which has been on air since January 1996, on and off from 2000 through 2018; Anime.com singles out episode 733, "The Wedding Reception and the Two Gunshots," as one of his.
Most of his career, though, was spent in live-action drama. Originally from Gifu, Kogiso was already writing scripts while enrolled in the literature department at Todai, which he quit before graduating, Sponichi Annex reports. His first professional credit came in 1980 on the detective show Taiyo ni Hoero!, and from there he specialised in cop shows, thrillers and historical pieces.
Among the series he returned to again and again were Hagure Keiji Junjoha and Sasurai Keiji Ryojohen, both detective dramas, along with the legal mystery Onna Bengoshi Takabayashi Ayuko.
