Nobody in Tsumuji Yoshimura's manga is born a boy or a girl. Children grow toward whichever sex they settle on at around twelve, and Hinase Arima, now eighteen, still hasn't picked. Then childhood friends Ritsu Kaga and Shiori Takayama both confess on the same day. Shaft's TV adaptation, Just Like Mona Lisa (Seibetsu "Mona Lisa" no Kimi e.), put out its first main promotional video on October 21 and confirmed it will air in 2027.

A song about choosing

The PV is also the first chance to hear the ending theme, "Mayoi wa Hikari," which singer-songwriter imase wrote for the series. In a comment posted on the official site, he said he saw a lot of himself in the work, and tied the song to his fondness for games with multiple endings, where a player's choices reshape what comes next and carry responsibility with them.

The tie-up marks part of a comeback. Per the anime's site, the Gifu-born artist, who made his major-label debut in December 2021 and played the Nippon Budokan in July 2025, paused his activities from August 2025 and returned in September 2026 with a new single, followed by an EP in October.

Seven new voices, roles still under wraps

The announcement added seven names to the cast, among them Yoshino Aoyama, Nobuhiko Okamoto, Daisuke Sakuma, Chiharu, Sho Hatano and Shion Wakayama. The site has not yet said who plays whom. They join Chika Anzai, who was announced earlier as Hinase. A first main visual released alongside the video shows Hinase flanked by Ritsu and Shiori, with their classmates appearing for the first time, and character profiles went up the same day.

Who's making it

Kana Shundo, whose credits include Apocalypse Hotel, directs, with Katsuhiko Takayama composing the series. Nobuhiro Sugiyama designs the characters and is also chief animation director, and Yuki Hayashi writes the music. CyberAgent is behind the production alongside Shaft.

The road here began in June 2026, when the adaptation was announced. The staff and a teaser followed in August at AnimagiC, the anime convention in Mannheim, Germany, where the teaser had its premiere.

The finished manga

Yoshimura serialized the story on Square Enix's Gangan Online from May 2018 to October 2022, and it is collected in ten volumes. Circulation has passed one million copies, and English readers can find it through Comikey and Square Enix's Manga UP! Global app. It was also nominated in the web category of the sixth Next Manga Awards.

A premiere date and broadcasters have not been announced.
