Inherit the Winds adds Daisuke Hirakawa, Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Kappei Yamaguchi and Toshiki Kumagai to its Shinsengumi drama before November 13 preview screenings
Aniplex's original Bakumatsu anime, made by Live2D Creative Studio and Drive, named four more cast members on October 31. A two-week theatrical preview opens November 13, ahead of the January 2027 broadcast on CBC and TBS's Agaru Anime block.
The Mibu ranks grew by four on October 31. Inherit the Winds (Kaze wo Tsugumono), the original Shinsengumi anime from Aniplex, gave Nishiki Niimi to Daisuke Hirakawa, Kisaburo Kawai to Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Kyusai Momoyama to Kappei Yamaguchi and Toshimaro Yoshida to Toshiki Kumagai.
MyAnimeList's report pairs each of the four with another role: Hirakawa with Tefuda ga Oome no Victoria, Toyonaga with Mao, Yamaguchi with Yomi no Tsugai and Kumagai with Tongari Boushi no Atelier.
A soldier without a past
The setting is Kyoto in the final years of the shogunate. A swordsman wakes up with no idea who he used to be, and Sōji Okita takes charge of him, renames him Jinsuke Tachikawa and enlists him with the Mibu Roshigumi, where he starts over.
That name was not invented for television. Yutaka Narui, the playwright who started the Caramel Box theater company, wrote a well-loved series of plays about a Tachikawa Jinsuke, including a Shinsengumi entry with the same title as this anime. Narui is the scriptwriter here and shares the original-work credit with Aniplex; Azuki Mashiba assisted on the original story.
The rest of the Shinsengumi
The four newcomers step into a large ensemble. Jinsuke is voiced by Daisuke Sakuma, a member of Snow Man. Yūki Kaji plays Okita, Aoi Yūki is Hyōgo Koganei, Kōki Uchiyama takes Toshizō Hijikata, and Yūichi Nakamura is the commander, Isami Kondō. There is also Kurosuke, a cat who lives at the corps' headquarters, voiced by Nichika Ōmori, who once played a cat called Okita Soji in a film by this same director. Yasuyuki Kase signed on as Kamo Serizawa in August, and the roster also lists Ryōhei Kimura (Shinpachi Nagakura), Ayumu Murase (Heisuke Tōdō), Simba Tsuchiya (Sanosuke Harada) and Takeo Ōtsuka (Keisuke Yamanaka).
How it is being made
Director Tomohiro Kawamura leads a production split between two studios, Live2D Creative Studio and Drive. Mantan Web calls it a period drama that blends Live2D animation with traditional cel work. Character designs come from Fumi Ebina, while the score is by Shigeru Kishida, a member of the band Quruli. Aniplex unveiled the project during Aniplex Online Fest 2025. In August, a 4-koma comic illustrated by Matsuri Muramatsu was announced to launch in 2026 on the Twi4 account run by Star Seas Company on X.
Theaters first, then TV
Before it reaches television, the show plays in cinemas: a preview screening opens November 13 and lasts only two weeks. Weekly broadcast begins in January 2027 within the Agaru Anime slot, airing Sunday nights at 11:30 on 28 TBS-affiliated stations, CBC and TBS among them.
