Fool Night's main trailer arrives three weeks before its November 26 Netflix release, with Tempalay and Nowlu on theme songs
SHAFT and Sunrise's first joint anime released its main trailer, a new key visual, five more cast members and both theme songs on November 5. Every episode of the Kasumi Yasuda adaptation drops worldwide on Netflix on November 26.
A young pianist whose father turned himself into a plant to cover her college fees. A politician determined to tear that system down. A walking plant blamed for a string of murders among the rich. Those are some of the faces Fool Night introduced on November 5, when it dropped its main trailer, a new key visual, its theme songs and five fresh cast names, exactly three weeks before Netflix puts every episode online worldwide on November 26.
What the trailer shows
The footage is cut to the opening song. Yomiko Horai lays out how humans become Spiriflora, the plant form at the heart of Kasumi Yasuda's story, while glimpses of protest against the practice build in the background and the creature Ivy makes her debut. An English dub trailer arrived the same day. On the new key visual, five leads stand under a storm-dark sky: Toshiro Kamiya with Saeko Kanaeno, Yomiko, Jin Hiragishi and Akira Yatsuka.
Toshiro is the lead: in Netflix's framing, he has to get used to living with a plant that draws its nourishment from him.
Songs
Tempalay's "Shake! spit out" opens each episode, and Nowlu closes them with "Iki" ("Breath").
Five more voices
Shion Wakayama is Sumi Matsuno, the music student hunting for the father who became a plant for her sake. Tsuchida voices Ken Hikasa, who runs the opposition party fighting the transformation system, and Nobuhiko Okamoto is his co-conspirator Nishi, a man with history with Akira. Sayaka Senbongi plays Okumura, a girl in her last year of middle school from a struggling family whose life shifts after she and her father join a protest. Yumiko Kobayashi rounds things out as Ivy.
They are added to the voices already announced, led by Koki Uchiyama as Toshiro alongside Minako Kotobuki, Aya Endo and Junya Enoki.
SHAFT meets Sunrise
This is the first time the two studios have shared a production. Atsushi Yukawa makes his debut as a series director, per Anime Corner; Jin Tanaka composes the scripts, Robert Sato handles character designs, and Tatsuya Kato scores it. Ryo Shimura assists Yukawa, Yota Tsuruoka directs sound, and J.C.STAFF's Maki Takano oversees the backgrounds.
The manga and what's next
Yasuda has been publishing the manga in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior since November 2020; volume 13 went on sale in Japan on June 30. VIZ Media holds the English rights, licensed in October 2023, and its 11th volume is due December 15. AniList lists the anime as an original net animation in the drama, psychological, sci-fi and thriller genres.
From November 27 to 29, the three days after the Netflix launch, a public piano display themed on the show will stand at Tokyo Midtown.
