Yi Huan is a Vice General in the army of Great General Ao Meng in the Kingdom story. Before he joined the army, he was a bandit leader. People called him Yi Huan the Beheader because he cut off the heads of the people in the towns he took. The name is well known for a reason: his methods are harsh and meant to scare the enemy. He sometimes sent tortured enemy soldiers back to their camp to break their courage.
He is proud, rough and sarcastic. He often smiles in a cocky way, and he rarely looks shocked, even in bad moments. He enjoys jokes at other people's cost. For example, he once made an untrained man a leader of a thousand soldiers just because he thought it was funny. He also plays cruel games with captured enemies before he kills them.
Still, he is loyal to Ao Meng. He answers when Ao Meng's name is used. The real history behind him is a Qin general named Huan Yi, who won battles against the state of Zhao. In the manga, he is described as skilled at war, using unusual plans and fear. He is also one of the new Six Great Generals of Qin. Xin Li is the hero of the story and fights on the same side of the war as Qin.

Kingdom is one of the best-selling manga in Japan, with more than 120 million copies in print. Yasuhisa Hara began drawing it in 2006 for Weekly Young Jump magazine. The story is a fictional retelling of a real time in Chinese history, the Warring States period, when seven kingdoms fought for control of the land. In 221 BC, King Ying Zheng of the state of Qin finally brought them all under one ruler. Kingdom follows the soldiers and generals who helped him reach that goal. The fifth TV season ran for 13 episodes on Japanese television, from January 14 to March 31, 2024. Because of a strong earthquake in Japan, the first episode was pushed back by one week. Kenichi Imaizumi directed this season. If you are new to the story, it helps to start with the first season. The main hero is Xin, also written as Li Xin. He grew up as an orphan during the wars, and he dreams of becoming the greatest general under heaven. His best friend, Piao, once shared that dream. Their paths led Xin to King Ying Zheng, and since then Xin has fought as one of the king's most trusted swords. By this season he leads his own troop, called the Fei Xin Unit, and he has grown from a wild boy into a real battlefield leader. Several allies stand by him. He Liao Diao is a clever young woman who dresses as a man and plans the unit's moves as its strategist. Qiang Lei is a skilled swordswoman who once worked as an assassin and now helps lead the unit. Together they have survived many close fights, and the friendship in the group is a big part of the show's charm. This season adapts a part of the manga known as the Koku You campaign. In it, Qin sends an army under General Kan Ki to take a key place from the neighboring state of Zhao. Xin and his unit are sent to support the plan. The campaign is not simple, though. Zhao has clever commanders of its own, such as Riboku, and Qin must also deal with trouble from within. The season is about big battles, but also about trust, plans that go wrong, and the weight of leading soldiers who may not come home. The tone is serious and epic. The series shows war from many angles: the planning behind the lines, the courage of those on the front, and the cost of every fight. Large armies clash in wide scenes, and the show mixes hand-drawn characters with computer-made crowds. Some viewers find the computer graphics less smooth, but many fans praise the strong story and the long, careful build-up of each battle. Kingdom has won major awards. It received the grand prize of the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2013. Fans of history, war stories, and tactics will find a lot to enjoy here. This season is best watched after the earlier ones, because it builds on friendships and rivalries that began long ago.
