Seika Ijichi runs the live music venue STARRY, and she treats the job with a seriousness that can come across as cold, especially to her own younger sister, Nijika Ijichi. Years earlier, Seika played guitar in a fairly successful band of her own, but she walked away from performing and spent eight hard years working ordinary jobs just to save enough money to open the venue instead.
That choice came at a cost. Seika and Nijika grew distant after their mother died, and real affection between the sisters now mostly hides behind arguments and short tempers, something Nijika jokingly blames on Seika acting like a stereotypical "tsundere," someone who hides caring behind a sharp attitude. Even so, Seika clearly wants the venue, and her sister's band, to succeed, since reconciling with Nijika was something their mother had hoped for before she passed away.
Seika's history in the local music scene runs deeper than just her own band. She once had a junior at college named Kikuri Hiroi, now a chaotic, heavy-drinking musician herself, and the two clearly share an old, complicated bond from those earlier days. Running STARRY lets Seika stay connected to the music world she gave up performing in, even if she now spends more time managing other young bands, including her own sister's, than playing a single note herself.

Bocchi the Rock! is a music comedy anime that became one of the surprise hits of 2022. It is based on a four-panel comic strip manga by Aki Hamazi, which has run in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Max magazine since 2018. Studio CloverWorks made the anime, and Keiichiro Saito directed it. The 12 episodes aired in Japan on Tokyo MX and other channels from October 9 to December 25, 2022. The hero is Hitori Gotoh. Her nickname is "Bocchi," which comes from a Japanese word for a person who is always alone. Hitori is very, very shy. Talking to people makes her panic. To feel brave, she picked up the guitar in middle school. She hoped that being in a band could help even a quiet girl like her stand out. She practiced for hours every single day, all alone in her room, and became really good. She even posts guitar videos online, where she has fans. But in real life, she still has no friends and no band. That changes when she starts high school. One day, a cheerful drummer named Nijika Ijichi meets her and asks her to fill in for a missing guitar player. Nijika is the leader of a small new group called Kessoku Band. In the band is Ryo Yamada, a cool and quiet bassist who writes the music and is often short on money. Later, Ikuyo Kita joins as the singer and second guitarist. Kita is bright and popular, the total opposite of Hitori. Hitori becomes the lead guitarist and writes the band's lyrics. The band plays at Starry, a small live music club in Shimokitazawa. This is a real Tokyo neighborhood famous for indie bands and small venues. The club in the show is based on a real place called Shelter. Kessoku Band was later even named an official ambassador for Shimokitazawa. The show follows the band as they practice, try to get more fans, and work toward bigger shows. Hitori must face her fears again and again just to stand on a stage. What makes the show special is how it shows Hitori's anxiety. When she feels stressed, the animation often turns wild and strange. She might melt, break apart, or turn into a blob. These surreal jokes are very funny, but they also show how hard everyday things can feel for someone with social anxiety. Many viewers said they felt seen by the show. Critics praised its animation, writing, music, and honest look at shyness. The music is a big part of its success. The songs are sung as if by Kessoku Band, and the band's 14-track album was a hit in Japan. The anime also boosted sales of the manga and even caused a rise in demand for the guitars the characters play. A second season was announced in February 2025. For anyone who has ever felt too nervous to speak up, Bocchi the Rock! is a funny, warm, and loud story about finding your people.
