On the same day Mizuho Kusanagi's Yona of the Dawn closed out its collected edition in Japan, the anime finally got a home. Posting on X, the TV anime's account (@yona_anime) revealed that Pierrot Films, the label Studio Pierrot launched in 2024, is animating the sequel.

The studio is, for now, the only new detail. Whether the continuation arrives as a second TV season, a movie or something else is still unknown, and there is no premiere window, cast or staff list yet; reports on the reveal say those will follow later.

Eleven years since the first series

Pierrot made the original adaptation, which premiered in October 2014 and ran for 24 episodes through March 2015. Three OVAs came out on DVD across 2015 and 2016. In the West, Funimation put the show out on home video, and every episode can be streamed on Crunchyroll.

The sequel itself is not new news: it was confirmed back when the manga reached its final chapter in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume, in the issue dated December 19, 2025. What was missing until this week was any word on who would make it.

How the manga wrapped up

Kusanagi started the series in Hana to Yume in 2009. After the main story concluded, a short side story ran in the magazine until July 2026, and volume 48 — the last one — went on sale in Japan on October 20, 2026. VIZ Media handles the English release.

The story centers on Yona, a princess raised in comfort at Hiryuu Palace. Her father the king has refused to let her marry her cousin Su-won, the man she loves, and on her 16th birthday a murder she witnesses sends her running from the palace with her bodyguard Hak at her side.

No date has been set for the next announcement.
