About
For almost ten years, fans of Yona of the Dawn asked the same question: would the anime ever come back? The first TV series from Studio Pierrot aired from October 2014 to March 2015. It stopped while the manga still had a long road ahead. On December 19, 2025, the answer finally came. The magazine Hana to Yume printed the last chapter of Mizuho Kusanagi's manga, and in that same issue it announced a new anime. This entry, often called Akatsuki no Yona (Zoku-hen), is that sequel. Zoku-hen simply means 'continuation' in Japanese.
Very little is public about the new show so far. Listings name Pierrot Films as the studio, which is a newer part of the Pierrot group that made the first series. As of now, there is no confirmed air date, episode count, or story plan. Because of this, this overview explains the world and the characters that the sequel is expected to bring back, without guessing about scenes that have not been shown.
The story is set in Kouka, a fantasy kingdom that looks like old East Asia. Its founding legend says a red dragon god named Hiryuu became the first king, and four warriors with dragon power stood by his side. Yona, the only princess, grew up safe and spoiled in the palace. Her life broke apart on her sixteenth birthday, when her cousin Soo-won (also written Su-won) killed her father, King Il, and took the throne. She ran away with Hak, her loyal and sharp-tongued bodyguard. Later they met Yun, a clever young doctor and cook, and then went looking for the dragon warriors from the old legend.
What makes the series special is how much Yona changes. She starts as a girl who cannot do anything for herself. On the road, she sees poor villages, greedy officials, and threats from other countries. She learns to fight and to make hard choices. Her small group of outsiders turns into a warm, noisy, found family. The show is known for mixing big feelings with silly comedy, and for a slow romance between Yona and Hak. It also treats the fight over the throne as a real political problem, not just a story about heroes and villains.
The manga that this sequel draws from is now complete. It ran for sixteen years and filled 48 books, and more than 16 million copies are in print. Because the first anime only adapted the early arcs, a large amount of the story has never been animated. This includes many travels, battles, and turns in the struggle for Kouka. A sequel has room to move into that untouched material.
Until the studio shares a trailer, cast list, or date, the best way to get ready is to watch the 24-episode first season and its three OVA bonus episodes. An OVA is an extra episode released on disc. Those episodes set up every main relationship that this continuation is expected to build on. The new season is one of the most requested returns in shoujo anime, which is the style of anime aimed mainly at teen girls.
