Firefly Wedding is a dark historical romance set in Japan's Meiji era, the period from 1868 to 1912 when the country was quickly modernizing. The TV anime premieres on October 9, 2026, on Fuji TV's late-night Noitamina program, and Crunchyroll streams it as it airs. It is made by David Production, the studio known for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Takahiro Kamei, who directed the 2022 Urusei Yatsura remake, directs it. Facing death, she does not scream or run. Instead, she makes a bold and desperate offer: she asks him to marry her. It is a strange way to try to save her life, and it throws both of them into a very unusual relationship. Shinpei, it turns out, takes the idea of a lifelong bond very seriously, in his own frightening way. His love can be intense and obsessive, the kind of character fans call "yandere" (someone whose love turns dangerous). The story is aimed at adult women readers, a group called josei in Japan. It deals with heavy themes, including illness, family pressure, the harsh treatment of women in that time, violence, and the sex trade. At the same time, it is a gripping love story between two people who both live close to death. The pull between danger and tenderness is what drives the drama. The beautiful Meiji-era setting, with its mix of kimono and Western fashion, gives the anime a rich visual style. Because of its mature themes, it is best for older teens and adults.
