Though I Am an Inept Villainess is a palace fantasy with a twist on the popular "villainess" genre. In most villainess stories, a heroine wakes up as the mean rich girl of a story. Here, a kind and gentle girl is forced to live as the most hated girl at court. The full title of the original work adds "Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court." It began as a web novel by Satsuki Nakamura in 2020 and became a light novel series with art by Kana Yuki. It has more than 3 million copies in circulation and won the NTT Solmare grand prize for light novels in 2023. Seven Seas publishes it in English. The anime is made by Doga Kobo and directed by Mitsue Yamazaki. It was first planned for April 2026 but was delayed. The first part aired from July to September 2026 on TV Tokyo and AT-X, and a second part is set to begin in January 2027. It streams on several services, including Crunchyroll. The setting is a kingdom inspired by old imperial China. Five powerful clans each send a young woman to the palace. These young women are candidates to marry the crown prince, and only one of them can become empress. Kou Reirin is the favorite. She is graceful, kind, and loved by almost everyone, and people call her the "butterfly" of the court. But she has been sick and weak her whole life. On the other side is Shu Keigetsu. She is rude, lonely, and disliked by everyone, and people mock her as the "rat." During a bright lantern festival, Keigetsu attacks Reirin with a secret and banned kind of magic. When Reirin wakes up, she is in Keigetsu's body, locked up in a prison cell. Keigetsu now has Reirin's lovely face and high position. But she quickly learns that Reirin's frail body is always close to collapse. What makes the story fun is Reirin's reaction. Instead of crying or wanting revenge, she is thrilled to finally have a healthy body that can run, work, and eat without getting sick. She faces a dangerous court trial for Keigetsu's past crimes with calm cleverness. She even enjoys hard labor like farming and gardening. Little by little, people around her start to see the "rat" in a new way. At the same time, Reirin and Keigetsu are forced to deal with each other. They discover that hidden plots inside the palace threaten them both. The show mixes comedy, court politics, mystery, and a bit of romance. It is about kindness, inner strength, and how unfairly people can judge someone by their face and rumors. It has one of the higher AniList scores among Summer 2026 shows.
