Paul Greyrat

Paul Greyrat gave up his noble family's title because he found that lifestyle too restrictive, choosing instead the freer, rougher life of a traveling swordsman. He turned out to have real talent for it, mastering three difficult sword styles while still young, and he built a reputation as a sharp, resourceful adventurer with a notorious weakness for women before he settled down.

That settling down came through Zenith, who adventured alongside him in a group called the Fangs of the Black Wolf and eventually became his wife and the mother of his son, Rudeus. Paul's wandering ways did not disappear entirely, though: an affair with a maid named Lilia left her pregnant, and he ended up taking her on as a second wife as well, adding more complexity to an already unusual family.

Everything changes when a sudden magical disaster scatters his family across the world. Unable to find his wife or children for a long stretch of time, Paul sinks into depression and heavy drinking, convinced he has failed the people he loves most. Only after reuniting with Rudeus does he begin to pull himself back together. His younger daughter, Norn, stays close to him through the worst of it and comes to love him deeply despite his flaws. Later, with Rudeus's help, Paul even manages to repair the strained relationship between Zenith and Lilia, slowly turning his chaotic, scattered family into something more like a real one.
