Melissa Shield is the daughter of the scientist David Shield, and like Izuku Midoriya, she was born without a Quirk, the superpower most people in her world are expected to have. Rather than let that stop her from being part of the hero world she loves, she turns her energy toward invention and hero support instead, following in her father's footsteps as a scientist.
Melissa comes across as warm, upbeat, and genuinely kind, but she is also realistic about what she can and cannot do without powers of her own, which gives her a grounded, practical streak underneath the cheerfulness. Her drive to help people even without a Quirk gives her a lot in common with Izuku, who spent years without one himself before inheriting the power called One For All.
In the story, Melissa's inventing skills become directly useful to Izuku: she designs the Full Gauntlet, a piece of support gear that lets him use One For All's full strength without hurting his own body in the process. Through her father's connection to All Might and the wider hero community, Melissa ends up swept into a dangerous situation involving a villain targeting her father's research, giving her a more active role in the story than her quiet, behind-the-scenes talents might first suggest.

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes is the first feature film in the My Hero Academia series. It was made by the studio Bones, directed by Kenji Nagasaki, and written by Yosuke Kuroda. The manga's creator, Kohei Horikoshi, oversaw the project, gave notes on the script, and designed its two new main characters. The film first played at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 5, 2018, and opened in Japan on August 3, 2018. It later came to theaters across the United States and Canada. The story is an original one, meaning it was written for the film and is not taken from the manga. It takes place during a short break in the TV story, after the students at U.A. High School finish their final tests and before they leave for their summer training camp. It also links to an episode in the third TV season. In this world, most people are born with a Quirk, a special power that can be anything from super strength to breathing fire. Heroes use their Quirks to fight crime, and U.A. is the top school for training them. Izuku Midoriya, called Deku, is a young student who dreams of becoming the greatest hero. He travels with his teacher and idol, All Might, the number one hero in Japan. All Might has been invited to I-Island, a huge man-made island that floats on the sea and moves from place to place. It is a city built for scientists, who study Quirks and make special hero gear. At the time of the visit, the island is hosting a big science fair where the newest inventions are shown to the world. All Might has come to see an old friend, David Shield, a brilliant scientist who once worked with him. Deku meets David's daughter, Melissa Shield. Melissa was born without a Quirk, just like Deku was. Instead of giving up on her dream, she studies hard to build tools that can help heroes. Her story reminds Deku of his own childhood, when everyone told him he could never be a hero. The fun trip quickly becomes a crisis. Villains break through the island's strong security and take control. The visitors and workers become hostages, and even the heroes on the island are trapped. A dangerous villain named Wolfram leads part of the attack. Deku, Melissa, and a group of his classmates who happen to be on the island must find a way to fight back, while All Might faces a threat that is bigger than it first seems. The story is about what it means to be a hero, and what happens when a good person makes a bad choice. The film has many big fights, but also warm moments between friends and a strong look at the bond between a teacher and his student. Critics liked it. The Los Angeles Times called it a high-energy blend of heroism, comedy, friendship, and battles. It made about 33 million US dollars around the world and won Best Film at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. It is a fun watch for fans who already know the main cast from the TV show.
