David Shield first meets the hero who will become All Might back when both of them are still young, long before either became famous in their own fields. According to the story behind the film, a young All Might, going by the name Toshi at the time, saves David, then just a promising young scientist, during a trip to the United States, and the two strike up a friendship that lasts for decades afterward.
That friendship turns into a lasting partnership: David grows into a brilliant inventor and goes on to design much of the support equipment that lets All Might perform at his best, eventually becoming respected enough in his field to earn recognition for his work on superpowers, called Quirks in his world. His home and workplace sit on I-Island, a sprawling center for hero technology and research.
When All Might visits I-Island together with Izuku Midoriya at the invitation of David's daughter, Melissa Shield, David runs a checkup on his old friend and discovers that All Might's power has nearly run out, a discovery that frightens him deeply, since he knows what losing that strength could mean for the Symbol of Peace and everyone who depends on him.

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes is the first feature film in the My Hero Academia series. It was made by the studio Bones, directed by Kenji Nagasaki, and written by Yosuke Kuroda. The manga's creator, Kohei Horikoshi, oversaw the project, gave notes on the script, and designed its two new main characters. The film first played at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 5, 2018, and opened in Japan on August 3, 2018. It later came to theaters across the United States and Canada. The story is an original one, meaning it was written for the film and is not taken from the manga. It takes place during a short break in the TV story, after the students at U.A. High School finish their final tests and before they leave for their summer training camp. It also links to an episode in the third TV season. In this world, most people are born with a Quirk, a special power that can be anything from super strength to breathing fire. Heroes use their Quirks to fight crime, and U.A. is the top school for training them. Izuku Midoriya, called Deku, is a young student who dreams of becoming the greatest hero. He travels with his teacher and idol, All Might, the number one hero in Japan. All Might has been invited to I-Island, a huge man-made island that floats on the sea and moves from place to place. It is a city built for scientists, who study Quirks and make special hero gear. At the time of the visit, the island is hosting a big science fair where the newest inventions are shown to the world. All Might has come to see an old friend, David Shield, a brilliant scientist who once worked with him. Deku meets David's daughter, Melissa Shield. Melissa was born without a Quirk, just like Deku was. Instead of giving up on her dream, she studies hard to build tools that can help heroes. Her story reminds Deku of his own childhood, when everyone told him he could never be a hero. The fun trip quickly becomes a crisis. Villains break through the island's strong security and take control. The visitors and workers become hostages, and even the heroes on the island are trapped. A dangerous villain named Wolfram leads part of the attack. Deku, Melissa, and a group of his classmates who happen to be on the island must find a way to fight back, while All Might faces a threat that is bigger than it first seems. The story is about what it means to be a hero, and what happens when a good person makes a bad choice. The film has many big fights, but also warm moments between friends and a strong look at the bond between a teacher and his student. Critics liked it. The Los Angeles Times called it a high-energy blend of heroism, comedy, friendship, and battles. It made about 33 million US dollars around the world and won Best Film at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. It is a fun watch for fans who already know the main cast from the TV show.
