About
Ashita no Joe 2 is the second anime based on the classic boxing manga by Asao Takamori and Tetsuya Chiba. It came almost ten years after the first series. This time the studio was Tokyo Movie Shinsha (now TMS Entertainment), but the director was again Osamu Dezaki. It aired on Nippon TV from October 1980 to August 1981, for 47 episodes, and it adapts the rest of the manga, all the way to the end.
At the start of this series, Joe Yabuki is not the wild, confident young man he once was. Something terrible happened in his past, and it still weighs on him. He does not want to stay at Danpei Tange's small gym anymore. So he walks away and travels without a goal, trying to forget. This is a quiet, sad start, and it shows that the show cares about Joe's feelings as much as his fights.
On the road, Joe meets fighters and tough men who stir up the fire he thought was gone. Two of them are Wolf Kanagushi, a boxer, and Goromaki Gondo, a street brawler. They do not mean to help him, but meeting them reminds Joe what fighting meant to him. In time he goes back home and back to the ring.
Returning is not simple. Joe and his trainer Danpei soon learn that the past has left a mark on Joe that is hard to see. It changes how he fights and holds him back at key moments. To help Joe break free, a world-famous boxer named Carlos Rivera is brought to Japan from Venezuela. Carlos is relaxed, playful, and very skilled, and he is very different from the Japanese fighters Joe knows. Yoko Shiraki, the rich young woman tied to Joe's boxing life, also stays an important part of his story.
The second series moves Joe into the world of professional boxing. The fights get bigger, and the stakes rise toward the top of the sport, where the world champion Jose Mendoza waits. But the show never becomes only about winning. It asks hard questions about why a person keeps fighting, what they are willing to give up, and what it means to burn your whole life for one goal.
Many fans think this series is even stronger than the first. Dezaki's style is at its best here: dramatic still frames, soft light, and slow, silent moments that make every punch hit harder. The cast is mostly adult men, and the mood is often lonely and thoughtful. It is still a sports anime, but it feels like a serious drama.
Ashita no Joe 2 is best watched after the first series, since it picks up the story directly. Together, the two shows tell one complete tale of a boy from the slums who gives everything to boxing. The story is often named among the most important sports stories in Japanese pop culture, and it later inspired the modern series Megalobox.
