To You in the Beyond

To You in the Beyond is an anime film that mixes mystery, romance, and a touch of the supernatural. It opens in Japanese theaters on October 9, 2026. TMS Entertainment is making it, with Junichi Wada as director. Hiiro Ishibashi voices the main character, Kazuki Tsukigase, and Anna Nagase voices the girl at the center of the mystery. The film is based on a light novel series by Akiko Abe, with art by syo5, published by Shueisha since October 2017. Three volumes were out by June 2026.

The story is set on a small island far from the mainland of Japan. Life there is slow and quiet, surrounded by sea. Kazuki is a high school boy who has chosen to move to a school on this island. He wants to go somewhere no one knows him, to get away from problems in his past. He hopes to start again as a stranger.

On the island, Kazuki hears a local legend. There is a small cove, a narrow inlet of the sea, where people are said to have vanished without a trace. Curious, he goes to see it. There, on the shore, he finds a girl lying unconscious. He takes her to the island clinic. When she wakes up, she remembers almost nothing about herself. She can only tell him her first name and that she is 16 years old. And she keeps quietly saying one number: 1974. That year was decades before the present day.

Who is this girl, and where did she come from? Why does she remember a year so long ago? Kazuki begins to look for answers, and in doing so he learns more about the island's old stories of people disappearing, and perhaps appearing again. As he tries to help her, the two grow closer, and the mystery becomes personal for both of them.

The film is a quiet coming-of-age story with a fantasy twist. It touches on loneliness, the wish to escape the past, and how people can connect across time and distance. The island setting, with its sea, old houses, and summer light, is a big part of its mood. TMS is known for detailed, warm animation, which should suit the gentle feel of the story.
