The Legend of Luo Xiaohei is a Chinese web animation, not a Japanese one. It was created by the artist MTJJ, whose real name is Zhang Ping, and made by his studio, Beijing Hanmu Chunhua Animation. The first episode went online on March 18, 2011. The series was made in a simple, soft Flash animation style, and new episodes came out slowly over many years. By July 17, 2021, it had 40 episodes and three specials. It became a much-loved cult hit in China and later reached fans in Japan and around the world.

The story takes place in a world much like modern China. But in this world, people, spirits, and gods all live side by side. Most humans do not know that spirits are real. Many spirits look like animals or like normal people, and some have strong magic. The hero, Luo Xiaohei, is one of these spirits. His true form is a small black cat.

The tale begins on a rainy night. A little black cat is alone and hurt in the rain. A kind girl named Luo Xiaobai finds him and brings him home. She gives him a name, Luo Xiaohei. In Chinese, 'xiao hei' means 'little black' and 'xiao bai' means 'little white', so the two names match like a pair. Xiaobai has no idea that her new pet is not an ordinary cat. Xiaohei can turn into other forms, and he carries tiny creatures called Heixiu inside him.

Xiaohei's new, quiet life does not last long. He is caught up in trouble with other spirits. Wikipedia describes a magical pearl that he took, and other spirits come looking for it. AniList also names Diting, who controls three winged wolves, as one of the threats. Soon, strange spirits and strong fighters come near Xiaobai's home, and Xiaohei must protect his new friend. Along the way, he meets Wuxian, a very old and powerful spirit who works as an Executor, a kind of guardian who keeps peace between spirits and humans. In later episodes, Xiaohei trains to become an Executor himself. The second part of the series even takes place inside a video game called All Living Things, where he must finish quests.

The show is loved for its gentle tone. It mixes cute and funny everyday moments with fast, beautiful fight scenes. It also has a warm heart. It is about finding a home, making friends, and learning where you belong. The art is simple, but the action is smooth and exciting.

The series grew into a large franchise. A movie, The Legend of Hei, came out in theaters in China and Japan in 2019. It tells a prequel story about how Xiaohei first met Wuxian.
