About
Takopi's Original Sin is a short anime series based on a manga by Taizan 5. The manga ran on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ app from December 2021 to March 2022. Even though it is only two volumes long, it sold over a million copies and won awards in Japan. The anime has six episodes. Studio Enishiya made it, and Shinya Iino directed and wrote it. It came out between June 28 and August 2, 2025, on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and other services, and Crunchyroll streamed it outside Asia.
One important thing first: this show looks cute, but it is not for young children. It deals with very heavy topics, including bullying, family abuse, and suicide. The makers even released a content warning before it aired. Viewers who find these subjects hard to watch should know this before starting.
The main character is Takopi, a small, pink, octopus-like alien from a place called the Happy Planet. His people want everyone in the universe to be happy, and Takopi comes to Earth to do just that. He is sweet, cheerful, and very simple. He does not understand human feelings well, and he thinks every problem can be fixed with a smile or the right tool. He carries special gadgets from his home planet, and some of them can do amazing things.
On Earth, Takopi meets Shizuka Kuze, a quiet elementary school girl who almost never smiles. Takopi decides that making her happy is his job. But Shizuka's life is full of pain that he cannot fix with a toy. At school, a classmate named Marina Kirarazaka treats her very cruelly. At home, things are not good either. Another classmate, Naoki Azuma, also becomes part of the story. As Takopi tries harder and harder to help, his good intentions start to lead to results he never expected. The story also uses time travel, as Takopi tries to go back and change what went wrong.
What makes the show stand out is how honest it is. It does not split the world into clear heroes and villains. Each child is dealing with their own hurt, often caused by the adults around them, and the story asks why people become cruel and what real kindness looks like. Takopi's innocent point of view makes the dark events feel even sadder, because he simply wants to help and does not see the danger.
Critics praised the anime's direction, animation, and strong emotional impact. One reviewer called the first episode beautiful but very painful. The series won many awards, including the jury award for a TV series at the 2026 Annecy animation festival, one of the biggest animation festivals in the world. A movie version is planned for Japanese theaters in November 2026.
